Baseball opens Wesleyan series with doubleheader split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Hamilton College's Ethan Wallis '21 drove in three runs in Game 2 and the Continentals split their NESCAC West Division doubleheader with the Wesleyan University Cardinals at Wesleyan's Dresser Diamond on Saturday afternoon.

Hamilton (9-9, 2-3 NESCAC West) posted a 6-2 victory in the nightcap after the Cardinals squeaked out a 3-1 win in Game 1. The teams return to Dresser Diamond on Sunday, April 7 for the finale of their three-game series at noon.

Game 2

The Continentals had just three hits but drew 13 walks including four in a five-run third inning that helped break things open. Brian Lawson '20 started on the mound and evened his record at 2-2 by tossing four scoreless innings. Chris Keane '20 pitched the final 3.2 innings and earned his first career save at Hamilton as he allowed just one hit and two walks.

Wesleyan (9-10, 3-2) starter Dan Lombardo was removed in the third inning after allowing three earned runs on a hit and six walks. Nolan Webb hurled five scoreless innings of relief.

The Continentals grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Wallis led off with a walk, went to second on a walk to Craig Sandford '19, and scored on an infield error. In the third inning Sandford and Matt Zaffino '21 led off with walks, and Nate Goodman '20 loaded the bases on a single to center field with one out. Graham McOsker '20 forced in a run with a free pass and Rich Marooney '21 made it 3-0 by coaxing a two-out walk with the bases still loaded. Wallis followed with a bases-clearing double to left center and Hamilton had a 6-0 ciushion.

The Cardinals scored two runs in the sixth inning on two singles and a pair of walks, but Keane shut them down the rest of the way. With one out in the sixth and runners on first and second, Goodman made a diving catch in right field that robbed Alex Cappitelli of extra bases and at least one RBI. Wesleyan put just two runners in scoring position over the last three innings.

Game 1

Gavin Schaefer-Hood '21 (4-1) was a hard-luck loser for the Continentals as he allowed three runs on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts in six innings. Schaefer-Hood pitched his second consecutive complete game. Zaffino's double was Hamilton's lone extra-base hit.

Chase Pratt led the Cardinals' offense with a triple and an RBI and Jonny Corning doubled. Kelvin Sosa started on the hill and pitched 3.2 hitless innings, but walked five and gave up a run. Pat Clare shut out the Continentals over the final 3.1 innings.

Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning but Hamilton responded with a run in the third. Marooney led off with a walk, stole second and went to third on a fly ball to right field. Jordan Northrup '19 drove in Marooney and was safe at first on a bunt back to the pitcher. The Cardinals took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Continentals didn't get a runner past second base in the final four innings.
