Baseball takes opener from Saint Joseph's College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Hamilton College Continentals split a non-conference doubleheader with Saint Joseph's College of Maine at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Florida, on Monday.

Hamilton (7-6 overall) extended its win streak to three games as it took the opener 12-7 thanks to a 16-hit attack and seven stolen bases. The Monks (13-3) came back with a 4-1 victory in the nightcap as three Saint Joseph's pitchers combined to allow one unearned run on five hits.

The Continentals are off until Friday, March 29 when they open NESCAC West Division play against Middlebury College at Polk State College Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven at noon.

Game 1

Hamilton scored in every inning except the fifth and led 8-4 after three. Matt Cappelletti '21 led the offense with a single and two doubles, and Brady Slinger '22 also had three hits. Ethan Wallis '21 singled twice and scored three runs, and Graham McOsker '20 went 2-for-3 with a walk. Craig Sandford '19 singled, drew two walks and drove in two runs, Matt Zaffino '21 doubled and plated two runs, and Jarrett Lee '21 drove in a pair. Chris Keane '20 (1-1) started on the mound and picked up the win with a four-inning effort. Tom Riley '20 and Carl Maxwell '22 pitched hitless fifth and sixth innings, respectively.

Drew Healey paced the Monks with two hits and three runs batted in, and Noah McDaniel also drove in three runs. Luke Klenda (0-1) entered the game with two outs in the top of the first inning and was saddled with the loss.

The Continentals grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Wallis and Slinger led off with singles and Lee drove in Wallis with a one-out single to left. After a double steal, Zaffino plated Slinger with a sacrifice fly, and Cappelletti's single to left scored Lee.

Saint Joseph's tied the score in the bottom of the inning but Hamilton regained the lead for good with two runs in the second. The Continentals loaded the bases on an error, a bunt single and an intentional walk, and both runs scored on another infield miscue.

Hamilton opened the third inning with four straight hits and took an 8-3 lead with three runs. Cappelletti doubled to left and went to third on McOsker's bunt single. Another bunt single by Joe Suski '21 scored Cappelletti, and a single up the middle by Rich Marooney '21 drove in McOsker. Marooney then stole second base and Suski came home on the throw.

The Continentals went up 9-4 in the fourth after Zaffino led off with a double and scored on a one-out single by McOsker. Hamilton added another run in the sixth thanks to defensive breakdowns. Matt McGoey '21 reached on an error and went all the way to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Zaffino's sacrifice fly scored McGoey with the Continentals' 10th run. Hamilton's advantage grew to 12-4 in the seventh inning when Sandford's single to right drove in Wallis and Suski.

The Monks tried to rally and did manage to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Ian Nish '19 shut it down by getting the last two outs on called third strikes.

Game 2

Five Continentals had one hit each and Wallis' double was the only one that went for extra bases. Starting pitcher Sam Thoreen '22 (0-1) was the tough-luck loser as he gave up one run on one hit and three walks in 3.2 innings.

Joey Murphy and Hunter Richardson posted two hits apiece and Healey drove in two runs for Saint Joseph's. Johnathan Flynn (2-0) tossed 4.2 shutout innings and picked up the win. Jonathan Marchia earned his second save this year with a perfect seventh.

Healey's sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning drove in the only run for either team through five. Hamilton's best scoring threat during the first five innings came in the third when the Continentals loaded the bases with one out on a single by Suski, a walk to Wallis and a bunt single by Slinger. The Monks took control with a three-run sixth but Hamilton got one back in the bottom of the inning. Cappelletti reached on a fielder's choice, went to second when Zaffino walked, and came around to score on two passed balls.
