Wallis '21 with two hits but baseball swept in doubleheader

The Hamilton College Continentals were swept in a non-conference doubleheader against The College of New Jersey Lions at Lake Myrtle Field in Auburndale, Florida, on Tuesday.

TCNJ (5-1 overall) won the opener 9-1 as Matt Volpe and Nickolas Kleftogiannis combined on a seven-inning no-hitter, and the Lions turned around and posted a 7-1 victory in the nightcap. TCNJ is ranked 28th in the coaches poll and is receiving votes in the D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 poll.

Hamilton (4-3) plays 11-6 Centre College at Lake Myrtle Field No. 5 in Auburndale on Wednesday, March 20 at 10 a.m.

Game 1
Volpe started on the mound and allowed one run on two walks and struck out six in five innings. Kleftogiannis pitched two perfect innings in relief. The Lions racked up 16 hits including four doubles. Leadoff hitter Danny Borup led the offense with three hits and three runs scored, and Thomas Persichetti chipped in three hits. Aydon Chavis contributed two hits and two runs batted in, and Jacob Simon and Gary Otten registered two hits apiece. David Cardona III and Matt Giacose drove in two runs apiece.

The Continentals turned two double plays behind four pitchers. Starting pitcher Chris Keane '20 (0-1) allowed three earned runs on 11 hits in five innings and Sam Thoreen '22 tossed a scoreless sixth inning. Keane threw 63 of his 86 pitches for strikes.

Hamilton tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning. Matt Cappelletti '21 and Jordan Northrup '19 led off with walks and moved up on a double steal. Craig Sandford '19 plated Cappelletti with a sacrifice fly to right field. TCNJ took the lead for good with a run in the third inning and added three runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh. The Lions scored five of their nine runs with two outs.

Game 2
Ethan Wallis '21 singled twice, drew a walk and stole two bases for the Continentals. Preston Perez '22 (0-1) pitched the first inning and took the loss while Jamie Hauswirth '22 allowed one earned run on two hits in 3.1 innings of relief.

Simon paced TCNJ with two hits including a double and scored twice. Tommy McCarthy doubled and Borup scored two runs. Andrew Rowan picked up the win by not allowing a base runner over the final three innings.

Hamilton fell behind 3-0 in the first inning but got one run back in the top of the second. Jacob Han '21 led off with a walk, went to second base on a fielder's choice and scampered over to third on a fly ball to center field. Wallis' single to left field drove in Han and made it 3-1. The Lions put it away with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
