Women's Ice Hockey

Mackey '20 notches 1st career hat trick in women's hockey win

Box Score

Hamilton College defender Kelli Mackey '20 scored a career-high three goals and the Continentals cruised to a 6-1 non-conference victory against the SUNY Potsdam Bears at Potsdam's Maxcy Hall on Saturday afternoon.

Hamilton (4-3-0 overall) has outscored its opponents 17-2 in the last three games -- all of them wins. Potsdam fell to 4-6-0 overall and extended its losing streak to three games.

The Continentals set the tone early as Mackey scored her first goal of the season just 59 seconds after the opening faceoff. In the midst of a scrum at the red line, Maura Holden '23 poked the puck ahead to Maddie Hong '23 who skated into Potsdam's zone untouched. Hong fired a shot that was denied by Alexa Pfeiffer (18 saves) and Mackey lifted the rebound over Pfeiffer's glove and into the nylon. Mackey scored her second (and the eventual game-winner) 2:14 later when the Bears turned the puck over at the top of their own zone and Mackey quickly rifled a shot into the opposite lower-left corner at 3:13.

Hamilton began the second period with a two-goal lead that grew to a five-goal cushion. Michaela Giuttari '20 netted her fourth in the last two games with the help of Hyla Mosher '23 at 4:59. Kayla McCabe replaced Pfeiffer in Potsdam's net with 15:01 remaining in the second and finished with 18 saves.

Jess Haviland '21 found Kate Piacenza '21 for a power-play goal at 7:53, and Mackey finished off the hat trick at 12:55 off feeds from Allie Curry '23 and Timary Malley '20.

Lucy Condon got Potsdam on the scoreboard with 3:02 remaining in the second when she attacked from the left side of the zone and fired a top-shelf shot over the right shoulder of Sidney Molnar '22 (23 saves). Mya Berretta '22 concluded the scoring with her 10th career goal 2:01 into the third period.

Hamilton wrapped up its schedule for the fall semester and will hit the ice again on Jan. 4 and 5 with a two-game series against Endicott College in Massachusetts.
