Box Score Tufts University's Rachel Hamilton scored with 5:59 left in the fourth quarter and lifted the Jumbos to a 3-2 come-from-behind NESCAC victory against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Goodfriend Field on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
The Continentals (4-7, 2-6 NESCAC) scored twice in the second quarter and took a 2-0 lead into the fourth. The goals were scored by Hamilton's two seniors -- Lizzie Clarke '20 and Michaela Giuttari '20 -- both of whom were recognized before the contest. The Continentals host Wesleyan University (5-7, 1-6) for another conference game on Saturday, Oct. 19 at noon.
Nationally ranked No. 7 Tufts (9-2, 6-1) scored all three of its goals in the fourth quarter. The Jumbos also won 3-2 at Amherst College on Saturday.
Tufts was awarded a penalty corner with 6:03 remaining and Marguerite Salamone inserted the ball to Hamilton, who blasted a slap shot that got a piece of the right leg of goaltender Maggie Reville '22, but it still had enough power to slam into the back of the cage. The goal was Hamilton's third this fall. Cat Donahue '21, who is one of Hamilton's top defenders, was not on the field due to a green card she received with 6:17 to go.
The Continentals had two more decent chances to score the tying goal late in the fourth. Clarke took a shot off a penalty corner that was knocked away by Jumbos goaltender Andie Stallman (four saves) with a little more than five minutes left. Hamilton was awarded one last corner with 14 seconds remaining, but Stallman turned away a shot by Donahue and Tufts ran out the final seconds.
Clarke gave the Continentals a 1-0 lead 1:32 into the second quarter when Hamilton was given a penalty stroke following a flurry of shots after a corner. Clarke's shot was low and to the right of Stallman for her first goal this year and the 12th of her collegiate career.
Giuttari made it a 2-0 cushion just 89 seconds later with her fifth goal this season. She took the ball into the arc from the left side and flipped a shot that deflected off a defender's stick and sailed over Stallman. Giuttari took over the program's all-time lead in points with 127 for the Continentals. She had scored her team-record 52nd career goal in a 1-0 win at Trinity College on Saturday. Hamilton dominated the quarter as it owned a 7-2 shot advantage during those 15 minutes.
Claire Foley put the Jumbos on the scoreboard with 12:50 to go in the fourth quarter. Foley also tied the score on her team-leading sixth goal and 13th point with 7:10 left. Julia Todesco picked up the assist on Foley's second goal of the day.
Reville finished with four saves. She is second in the NESCAC with 92 and fourth with a save percentage of .800.
