No. 15 field hockey edges Bates on goal by Nahon '27 in second OT

Janssen '28 made nine saves in a fantastic effort for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Isabelle Nahon '27 scored 1:39 into the second sudden-victory overtime period and lifted the Continentals to a 2-1 NESCAC win against the Bates College Bobcats at Hamilton's Goodfriend Field on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Season Update

  • The 15th-ranked Continentals (2-0, 1-0 NESCAC) shut out Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 4-0 in their season opener on Sept. 8.
  • Nationally ranked No. 10 Bates (1-2, 1-2) was coming off a wild 3-2 overtime win against No. 16 Bowdoin College on Sept. 9.

How It Happened

  • Alden Duserick '27 inserted the ball on a penalty corner to Nahon at the top of the shooting circle. Nahon moved the ball over the line and swept a low shot towards the cage. The ball hit a defender's stick near the penalty stroke dot, bounced past the scrambling goalkeeper and trickled over the goal line for the game-winner.
  • There were no shots in the first quarter and no goals in the first half before the Bobcats finally broke the ice with 5:38 left in the third quarter. A Hamilton player was sent off with a green card and on the restart, Catherine Russell hammered a pass from the dotted line outside the top of the shooting circle to Alexa Queen, who was cutting towards the cage from the left side. Queen redirected the ball inside the left post and into the wide-open cage.
  • The Continentals tied the score 1:53 into the fourth quarter. Shaw Huston '28 inserted on a penalty corner to Nahon at the top of the shooting circle. Nahon hammered another low shot and Eva Bell '29 tipped the ball to the goalkeeper's left and into the netting.
  • Hamilton had all three shots in the fourth quarter.
  • The teams went to overtime and played 7-on-7. The Continentals received a yellow card midway through the first extra period and had to play the final five minutes with just five field players.
  • Hamilton withstood four corners and six shots by Bates as the Bobcats desperately tried to end the game. Continentals goalkeeper Kelly Janssen '28 punched a shot away following one penalty corner and Morgan Clarke '28 made a fantastic defensive save on the next corner.

Notes

  • Nahon posted a goal and an assist for the second straight game.
  • Bell scored the second goal of her Hamilton career.
  • Duserick was credited with her second career assist and her first since 2023.
  • Janssen, who blanked RPI, was outstanding again with nine stops. The save total was her second highest in a game for the Continentals.
  • Clarke has a defensive save in both games this year.
  • Hamilton defeated Bates by the same score last year in Lewiston.
  • The teams last played on Sept. 12 in 2015 and the Continentals blanked the Bobcats, 1-0.
