Women's soccer goes toe-to-toe with No. 6/16 Middlebury

Box Score

Middlebury's Leah Salzman scored in the 77th minute to lift the nationally ranked No. 6/16 Panthers to a 1-0 NESCAC win against the Continentals at Hamilton's Love Field on Sunday.

Hamilton moves to 3-2-1 overall and is 3-2 in the NESCAC. Middlebury (7-0 overall) remains undefeated with four wins in conference play.

Both teams battled through a scoreless first half. The best chance for the Continentals came 11:40 into the contest when Kayleigh Harris '20 took a shot from the top of the penalty area that Panther keeper Ursula Alwang (seven saves) made a diving save to her right side.

Rachel Pike '21 (seven saves) kept the game scoreless when the Panthers exploded out of their own zone following a corner, forcing a 2-on-1 situation. Salzman had an open shot on the left side and Pike made a kick save. Less than two minutes later, Amanda Dafonte passed the ball between the Hamilton defenders and Salzman used her speed for a breakaway, placing the ball just inside the far post with 13:34 remaining on the clock.

Hamilton's two best chances in the second half both came in the 67th minute. Katie McKillop '19 blasted a shot from 30 yards out that Alwang just managed to punch over the crossbar to award a corner kick to Hamilton. Kristin Hughes '20 took the kick for the Continentals, lofting the ball to the back post where Olivia Simone '19 went up for the header but Alwang made the diving save.

Hamilton travels to Wesleyan University on Saturday, Sept. 29 for a NESCAC game at 11 a.m. and follows with another conference game at Tufts University on Sunday.
