Box Score Hamilton College posted yet another shutout in a 2-0 NESCAC win against the Bowdoin College Polar Bears at Bowdoin's Sidney J. Watson Arena on Friday night.
This is Hamilton's ninth shutout of the season and the eighth for all-American goaltender Sam Walther '18, who made 25 saves. Walther has blanked her last two opponents and has 24 in her career with the Continentals (12-6-1, 8-3-0 NESCAC). She leads Division III with those eight shutouts and is second with a 0.95 goals against average and .963 save percentage. Her numbers are even better in conference games as she boasts a 0.92 goals against average and .967 save percentage with five shutouts in 11 starts.
The game-winning goal came just 1:40 into the first period when Olivia Hawes '19 scored for the second time this week and fourth time this season. After the initial shot, there was a scramble in front of the net that allowed Hawes to push the puck past Bowdoin's Kerri St. Denis (19 saves) for the early lead.
Bowdoin's best chance in the first came with just over four minutes left to play when Walther gave up a rebound that popped high in the air, but a Hamilton defender was there to bat the puck away.
Although the second period was scoreless, Walther and her defense fought off a flurry of action on Bowdoin's power play midway through the period. She turned away a number of point-blank and one-on-one opportunities by the Polar Bears (9-7-1, 3-7-1 NESCAC).
With 16 seconds left to play in the third, Missy Segall '21 scored on an empty net for her team-high 10th goal this season. Segall beat her defender up the boards, carried the puck deep into the zone, and slipped it into the empty net to clinch the road win.
Hamilton closes out the series with the Polar Bears back in Brunswick, Maine, again on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 3 p.m.
