Box Score The Hamilton College women's hockey team dropped game two of a two-game series 2-1 in overtime against nationally ranked No. 5/6 Middlebury College on Saturday afternoon at Russell Sage Rink.
Middlebury's Maddie Winslow scored 44 seconds into the sudden-victory overtime period to give the Panthers their seventh straight win. Madie Leidt broke the puck out of the Middlebury zone with a pass to Winslow at the blue line, and Winslow hit Jenna Marotta across the ice as she progressed into the Hamilton end. Caroline Knop '18 blocked Marotta's wrist shot and a trailing Winslow was there for the loose puck. Winslow was 1-on-1 with Sam Walther '18, and it took two shot attempts for Winslow to get the puck in the net.
Walther made a season-high 46 saves between the pipes for Hamilton. Julia Neuburger had 17 saves for Middlebury with 10 in the third period alone.
The Panthers struck first after nearly 23 scoreless minutes. Middlebury moved the puck around the back of the net in the Continentals' zone to Ellie Barney at the right faceoff circle. Barney snapped a shot that was denied by Walther, and as the rebound popped out to the front of the net Rachael St. Clair tipped the puck over Walther's head and inside the left post for her first goal of the season 2:39 into the second period.
Andrea Rockey '19 scored her second goal of the series at the 7:59 mark of the second period, making the score 1-1 at the second intermission. Elise Park attempted to break out of the Panthers' end, but the hustle play of Maddie Beitler '21 kept the puck in the visitor's zone. Beitler won the battle in the corner and delivered a centering pass to Rockey. Rockey deked around the defender and placed the puck between the legs of Neuburger. Rockey has seven goals on the season and Beitler has five assists.
Hamilton (10-6-1 overall) has lost three straight NESCAC games after winning its first seven. Middlebury (12-3-1) maintains its top spot in the NESCAC standings with an 8-1-1 conference record.
Hamilton returns to the ice on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. for its final non-conference game of the regular season against SUNY Potsdam (10-7-2) at Russell Sage Rink. The Bears defeated the Continentals 2-1 at the beginning of the month in Potsdam, N.Y.
