Women's hockey wins 10th game of the season at Wesleyan

Box Score

Sam Walther '18 made 25 saves as the Hamilton College women's hockey team earned their 10th win of the season by posting their fourth straight shutout with a 4-0 victory at Wesleyan University on Friday night.

Hamilton (10-3-1, 7-0 NESCAC) has outscored their opponents 12-0 in the last four contests.

Missy Segall '21 notched her team-leading eighth goal of the season and her fifth goal in the last six games 4:36 after the opening faceoff. Stephanie DiPietro '18 dumped the puck into the Wesleyan zone and when the Cardinals attempted to break out, Segall intercepted a pass in the high slot. She was 1-on-1 with Wesleyan's Allegra Grant (31 saves) and snapped a shot over Grant's shoulder into the upper-left corner of the goal to give Hamilton a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.

The Continentals quickly gained a two-goal edge 2:37 into the second period. Olivia Hawes '19 and Andrea Rockey '19 won the battle in the corner and kicked the puck out to Taegan Blackwell '19 at the point. Blackwell skated into the high slot for a shot. Grant made the initial stop but the rebound trickled over the goal line as both teams battled for the puck inside the crease.

Michaela Giuttari '20 added the first insurance goal for Hamilton 8:25 into the second period. Segall sent the puck into the Cardinals' zone to allow a line change for the Continentals and when Wesleyan attempted to break out, Giuttari was waiting at the blue line. Giuttari stole the puck and proceeded to skate around three Wesleyan defenders for a wide-open shot at the hash marks, sending a wrist shot into the upper-right corner of the net for her seventh goal of the season.

Hamilton scored its final goal with 6:55 remaining in the third period. Blackwell gathered the loose puck out of the corner in Hamilton's zone and passed to Maddie Beitler '21 up the right side of the boards. Beitler turned and found Hawes at the Continentals' blue line, and Hawes then passed to Rockey at the red line. Rockey sped around the last Wesleyan defender, fired a backhander, and the puck found its way between Grant's legs and into the back of the net.

The second game of the two-game series begins at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20 in Middletown, Conn., at Wesleyan's Spurrier-Snyder Rink.
