Giuttari '20 OT goal keeps women's hockey undefeated in NESCAC

Box Score

Hamilton College's Michaela Giuttari '20 scored with 10.2 seconds left in the sudden-victory overtime period and lifted the Continentals to a 1-0 NESCAC win against the Trinity College Bantams in women's hockey action at Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink on Saturday afternoon.

The Continentals (8-3-1, 6-0-0 NESCAC) remained in first place in the conference with their second 1-0 overtime triumph this season. Hamilton edged Colby College by the same score back on Dec. 1. The Continentals have allowed just three goals in six NESCAC games.

Sam Walther '18 made 20 saves and posted her second shutout in as many days. Hamilton has blanked its opponents five times and is second in Division III in scoring defense with 0.92 goals allowed per game. Walther, who has four shutouts this season and 20 in her career with the Continentals, lowered her goals against average to 0.91 and raised her save percentage to .964.

As the clock was winding down in the extra period, Trinity (2-10-0, 0-8) tried to clear the puck by bouncing it against the right-side boards, but Andrea Rockey '19 intercepted it. Rockey skated above the right circle and passed to Giuttari in the high slot. Giuttari carried the puck a few feet down the slot and fired a wrist shot that beat the goaltender to her left on the glove side. Giuttari is tied for the team lead with six goals and has a team-high 12 points. Rockey picked up her fifth assist and eighth point this season.

Kelcie Finn nearly won it for the Bantams less than 30 seconds before Giuttari's heroics. Finn received a pass at center ice behind the Hamilton defense and skated in alone on Walther but her wrist shot banged off the right post.

Trinity's Lauren MacMaster had a great scoring chance 4:25 into the third period when her shot from just outside the right side of the crease slid off her blade and skidded wide right of the goal. The Continentals received a power play with 2:20 left in the third but didn't take advantage of it.

Hamilton had two quality opportunities late in the second period. Missy Segall '21 skated in on a breakaway with 2:25 left but Kai-Lilly Karpman (42 saves) batted away the backhand attempt. In the final seconds of the period, a slap shot by Caroline Knop '18 from above the left circle deflected off a player and rang off the left post.

The Continentals enjoyed a 17-3 shot advantage in the first period and finished with a 43-20 cushion. Hamilton, which has won three of its last four against the Bantams, was 0-for-3 on the power play. Trinity had one power-play chance midway through the third period as the Bantams dropped their eighth in a row.

The Continentals are on the road for a non-conference game at Morrisville State College on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. The Mustangs edged Hamilton 1-0 at Sage Rink back on Nov. 21.
