Women's soccer wins behind OT goal by McKillop '19

Box Score

Hamilton College's Katie McKillop '19 scored with 36.6 seconds left in the first sudden-victory overtime period and lifted the Continentals to a 1-0 NESCAC win against the Wesleyan University Cardinals at Hamilton's Love Field on Friday.

McKillop, who has played the majority of her collegiate career on the back line, notched her second goal with the Continentals. Kristin Hughes '20 took a corner kick with about 45 seconds remaining and delivered the ball directly to McKillop positioned at the top of the 18-yard box. McKillop collected the pass, turned and lofted a perfectly-placed shot just over the keeper's reach. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced straight down. Amanda Becker '18 followed the shot and hammered the ball into the back of the net but it had already been determined that McKillop's shot landed over the goal line. Hughes has two assists this year.

Emily Dumont '18 made a career-high nine saves and posted her third shutout this season. Dumont has a 0.76 goals against average and .850 save percentage.

Hamilton (4-3-1, 2-3-1 NESCAC) has allowed just two goals in its last six games. The Continentals are 2-0-1 in overtime games this year with another 1-0 OT victory at Trinity College on Sept. 16. Hamilton is 5-0-2 in seven games all-time against Wesleyan (4-3-1, 0-3-1).

The Continentals dominated the 10-minute overtime period with six shots and four corner kicks. For the game, Hamilton held a 20-12 shot advantage and a 10-4 edge in corners.

Both teams had excellent scoring chances in regulation. In the 25th minute the Cardinals' Lauren Goetzman cracked a high shot from long distance off a restart and Dumont needed to make a leaping save to keep it out of the goal. The Continentals' Maddie Dale '20 smashed a shot that Meg Hanan (five saves) deflected off the crossbar with her outstretched hand and eventually led to a corner kick in the 60th minute. McKillop crushed a shot that Hanan knocked over the crossbar in the 71st minute.

Hamilton travels to Hartwick College for a non-conference game on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. Wesleyan stays on the road for a NESCAC game at Trinity on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
