Women's lacrosse takes down Tufts 10-6 on Senior Day

Seven Hamilton College players scored at least one goal and the Continentals' defense was impressive again in their 10-6 NESCAC win against the Tufts University Jumbos at Hamilton's Steuben Field on a windy and chilly Saturday afternoon.

The nationally ranked No. 15 Continentals (7-4, 5-2 NESCAC) are allowing an average of less than seven goals per game in conference play and only one NESCAC team has scored more than eight goals against Hamilton this year. The Continentals were credited with 17 caused turnovers.

Tufts (5-4, 2-4) tied a season low with its six goals. The Jumbos entered the day leading the way in the conference with 13.75 goals and more than 14 draw controls per contest. Hamilton owned an 11-7 advantage in draws.

Nora Klemmer '17 led the Continentals with three points on a goal and two assists. Kara Pooley '19, Darby Philbrick '18 and Skyler Simson '20 scored two goals each and Alex Hendry '19 and Morgan Fletcher '17 posted a goal and an assist apiece. Fletcher leads the team with 11 assists and 27 points.

Maddie Fitzpatrick '18 led the Hamilton defense with career highs of five caused turnovers and seven ground balls. Fletcher tied a season high with four caused turnovers. Pooley matched a career best with four draw controls and Casey File '17 chipped in a career-high four ground balls and won three draw controls. Hannah Rubin '17 made her first start in goal this year and made four saves in the first half. Hannah Burrall '19 relieved Rubin at the start of the second half and stopped one shot.

Kate Mackin paced the Tufts offense with two goals and an assist, and Dakota Adamec scored twice. Casey Briody caused three turnovers and scooped up a game-high eight ground balls. Audrey Evers made six of her seven saves in the second half and finished with six ground balls.

Hendry gave the Continentals an early lead on her fifth goal just 29 seconds into the first half. Mackin tied the score on a pass from Megan Toner with 26:40 left but Hamilton went back in front for good 24 seconds later on an unassisted goal by Pooley. Pooley made it 3-1 on a free-position goal with 23:07 remaining.

More than 14 minutes passed before anyone scored again. Jackie Cuddy '18 broke the drought for the Continentals on her 15th goal with 8:42 to go. Mackin cut the Jumbos' deficit to two goals on her 19th with 5:33 left before Philbrick countered for Hamilton with 2:51 remaining on a pass from Fletcher. The Continentals took a 5-2 advantage into the break.

Tufts drew first blood in the second half as Adamec scored on a feed from Emily Games with 25:27 to go. Hamilton took control with three straight goals for an 8-3 lead with 15:47 left. Philbrick scored her 16th on a free-position shot, Hendry found Simson for another goal with 16:04 remaining and Klemmer tallied her 14th just 17 seconds later.

The Jumbos called a time out, settled down and then moved within four goals with 12:39 to go when Taylor Meek found the back of the net on a pass from Caroline Nowak.

The Continentals responded with two goals in a row and clinched the victory. Klemmer passed to a cutting Simson who scored her third this year from close range, and Fletcher recorded an unassisted tally for a comfortable 10-4 advantage with 7:19 left. Fletcher's goal -- her 16th this year -- was scored while Tufts was down a player after one of the Jumbos was sent off for a yellow card with 9:02 remaining. Tufts added two goals in the final six minutes. Hamilton owned a 14-6 shot advantage and won seven draws to the Jumbos' three in the second half.

The Continentals honored Rubin, Fletcher, File, Klemmer, Taylor Ryan '17, Ellison Sherrill '17 and Lillie Simourian '17 after the game with a senior day ceremony.

The Continentals are on the road for their final four games of the regular season. The first one is a NESCAC contest at Williams College on Tuesday, April 11 at 6 p.m. Tufts heads down to SUNY Cortland for a non-conference game on Sunday, April 9 at noon.
