Baseball comes back to beat nationally ranked SUNY Oswego

Box Score

The Hamilton College baseball team celebrated its first win at the program's new home, rallying to beat nationally ranked SUNY Oswego 7-5 Wednesday afternoon at the Loop Road Baseball/Softball Complex.

The Continentals improved to 7-8 on the season after scoring four times in the seventh to take the lead for good against the Lakers (14-6 overall), who are ranked eighth by the American Baseball Coaches Association and ninth by D3baseball.com.

After the visiting Lakers scored single runs in the sixth and seventh to break a 3-3 tie, the Continentals used five hits, four stolen bases and three Oswego misplays to put four runs on the board. Andrew Haser '17 drove in the first run in the rally and scored the winning run on the first of the Lakers' two errors in the inning.

Craig Sandford '19 singled through the right side to lead off the inning and Kenny Collins '17 beat out a bunt in front of home plate. Haser's single pulled the Continentals to within a run, then he and Kenny Collins pulled off a double steal. Dean Rosenberg '18 singled in the tying run before an errant pickoff throw to first sent Haser home to put the hosts ahead for good. After a Chris Collins '17 single put runners on first and third, Rosenberg and Chris Collins combined for Hamilton's second double steal of the inning.

Relievers Kenny Gray '20 and Tom Riley '20 gave up just two hits over the final three innings for Hamilton. Gray (2-0) pitched the seventh to earn the win and Riley picked up the save in his collegiate debut, allowing just one base runner over the eighth and ninth innings.

Hamilton scored three times over the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game at 3-3 with all three runs scoring on bases-loaded walks. Just one of the nine Continentals who reached base in the two innings got aboard on a hit (six batters walked, one was hit by a pitch and one reached on catcher's interference). Graham McOsker '20, Ian Nish '19 and Haser each forced in a run by drawing a walk.

The Lakers, who had won six of seven coming in, got on the board with three fourth-inning runs. Eli Holton's bases-loaded walk plated the first run and Eric Hamilton singled in two more.

Josh Barnes hit a sixth-inning sacrifice fly and Josh Hoagland scored on a passed ball an inning later as Oswego retook the lead.

Hamilton starter Callum Slater '20 had five strikeouts in just 3.2 innings.

The Continentals continue their six-game homestand Thursday, taking on SUNY Canton in a 4:15 p.m. start.
