Continentals steal seven bases in win over Cazenovia

Box Score

The Hamilton College baseball team improved to 12-7 in non-league competition with a 13-3 win over the visiting Cazenovia College Wildcats Tuesday afternoon at the Loop Road Baseball/Softball Complex. The Continentals are now 13-14 overall.

Hamilton pounded out 15 hits (including six for extra bases) and stole a season-best seven bases in the win. Kenny Collins '17 stole four bases, Ryan Wolfsberg '17 drove in four runs and Andrew Haser '17 turned in strong performances at the plate and on the mound.

Haser went three-for-five with a pair of doubles. He made his second start of the season and earned his first win of the spring by allowing just four hits over six innings.

All three were in the middle of a four-run third inning that put the Continentals ahead 4-1. Kenny Collins drove in his brother Chris Collins '17 – who had doubled in the tying run and then stole third – to give Hamilton the lead for good; Wolfsberg doubled Kenny Collins home; and Haser doubled and scored the fourth run of the inning.

The Continentals scored a dozen runs between the third and sixth innings. Three scored in the fourth with Jordan Northrup '19 (who tripled with one out) and Kenny Collins (who walked and stole second) both coming home on an infield hit by Wolfsberg.

An inning later, Northrup and Robert Morris '17 both hit sacrifice flies after Haser scored on an infield error. In the sixth Kenny Collins walked – reaching base for the fourth time – and stole second before scoring on Wolfsberg's triple. Brett Mele '17 singled Wolfsberg home and scored on a double down the left field line by Haser.

Wolfsberg added a sacrifice fly in the seventh to plate Hamilton's final run. Northrup and Chris Collins had two hits apiece.

Haser raised his career record to 3-0, striking out five Wildcats. Relievers Carter King '19, Justin Schirmacher '20 and Brian Lawson '20 each pitched an inning out of the bullpen, combining to hold the visitors to four base runners over the last three innings.

Taylor Enck – who blasted a home run to left field with one out in the ninth – and Nick Castrello both had two of Cazenovia's seven hits. Enck also scored the first Wildcat run, coming home on a second-inning wild pitch.

Cazenovia starter David Gabrielsen fanned six batters in four innings.

The Continentals host their final NESCAC West Division series of the season this weekend, facing the Williams College Ephs at the Loop Road Complex. The two teams play a nine-inning single game Friday at 4 p.m. then meet in a noon doubleheader Saturday.
