Klemmer '17 nets two goals in No. 13 women's lacrosse setback

Box Score

The William Smith College Herons ended the game with five straight goals and rallied for an 8-4 non-conference win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Withiam Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The loss was the first this season for the nationally ranked No. 13 Continentals (1-1 overall). Hamilton had won the last 11 games against William Smith -- a streak that dated back to April 2006.

Nora Klemmer '17 scored two goals and Morgan Fletcher '17 chipped in a goal and an assist for the Continentals. Kara Pooley '19 notched the other goal and caused three turnovers. Fletcher and Casey File '17 scooped up three ground balls apiece, and Hannah Lease '18 was credited with three caused turnovers. Hannah Burrall '19 started in goal and made four saves, and Hannah Rubin '17 stopped two shots in the second half.

Alexandra Bird figured in all but one of the Herons' goals as she scored four times and posted three assists. Melissa Moore contributed two goals, an assist and three ground balls, and Ali Burns had a goal and a helper. Bizzer Gahagen tallied a goal and won six draw controls. Laura Rollins picked up three ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers. Sarah Honan came up with eight stops in goal.

William Smith (2-0) led 3-2 at the break but Hamilton went back up 4-3 on goals by Fletcher and Klemmer early in the second half. Fletcher scored on a free-position shot with 26:12 left and then made a nifty pass to Klemmer for a score that put the Continentals in front by one exactly two minutes later.

Neither team scored for the next nine minutes until Bird put the ball in the back of the net on a free-position shot with 15:08 remaining. The Herons won the ensuing draw control (William Smith owned a 10-4 advantage on the draw) and took the lead for good 32 seconds later when Bird found Moore for the go-ahead goal.

It remained a one-goal game for almost nine more minutes until Burns gave the Herons some cushion on her goal off a pass from Rachel Slagle with 5:47 to go. Bird made it 7-4 on an unassisted tally with 3:55 left and Gahagen rounded out the scoring on a man-up goal with 2:34 remaining, 32 seconds after a Hamilton player was sent off for a yellow card.

The Continentals grabbed a 2-0 lead on unassisted goals by Klemmer and Pooley 62 seconds apart early in the first half. Bird drew William Smith even with two goals and then passed to Moore for a goal and the 3-2 advantage with 2:54 to go before halftime.

Hamilton hosts Wesleyan University for a NESCAC contest on Saturday, March 11 at noon.
