Pitching gems lead baseball to sweep of Bowdoin

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Hamilton College baseball team stretched its streak to four wins in five games with a sweep of Bowdoin College in a doubleheader played in Auburndale, Fla. The Continentals (4-3) posted a pair of shutout wins, blanking the Polar Bears 3-0 and 6-0.

Dan DePaoli '18 threw a complete-game four-hitter in the opener. Chris Keane '20 and four relievers allowed just four hits in the game two shutout.

DePaoli's shutout was the first of his career and his 10 strikeouts were a collegiate-best.

He faced just one batter over the minimum through the first three innings, with the only base runner reaching on a dropped third strike. DePaoli worked out of trouble in each of the last four innings, stranding six Polar Bears.

Hamilton strung together three straight singles to open the scoring in the top of the second. Brett Mele '17 led off with the first of his two hits and moved to third on a base hit by Graham McOsker '20. Robert Morris '17 singled home the game's first run.

An inning later, Kenny Collins '17 and Andrew Haser '17 singled to put runners on the corners before a Chris Collins '17 bunt and a Dean Rosenberg '18 ground out gave Hamilton a 3-0 lead.

The Polar Bears brought the tying run to the plate in three straight innings. A lead-off single by
Sean Mullaney and a two-out hit by Colby Joncas in the fourth put two runners on but DePaoli ended the inning with a strikeout.

An inning later Jack Wilhoite walked and a single by Nick Sadler put runners on second and third before a fly ball kept Bowdoin off the scoreboard.

In the sixth, Brandon Lopez singled to lead off the inning and Joncas drew a one-out walk but the Continental infield turned an inning-ending double play.

In game two, Hamilton scored five third-inning runs and Keane allowed one hit over 3.2 innings in his first collegiate start.

Craig Sandford '20 capped the Continentals' outburst in the third. Kenny Collins started the rally, reaching first on a dropped third strike. He stole second and scored on a single by Jordan Northrup '19. Chris Collins was hit by a pitch and Haser and Rosenberg followed with RBI singles before Craig Sandford's double to right center gave Hamilton a 5-0 lead.

An inning later, Chris Collins homered to left field to close the scoring.

Keane retired the first eight Polar Bears before Eric Mah singled and Sadler walked but Keane induced an inning-ending ground ball.

After Keane was lifted in the fourth, the Hamilton bullpen took over with Carter King '19 and Kenny Gray '20 combining to get seven outs (three by strikeout). Brett Sandford '20 set Bowdoin down in order to finish the win and the sweep.

The Continentals continue spring trip play Tuesday, taking on Elmhurst in an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
