Hamilton splits baseball twinbill with Dickinson

The Hamilton College baseball team split a doubleheader with Dickinson College Friday in Auburndale, Fla. The Continentals lost the opener 5-1 before rallying for a 12-8 win game two.

Hamilton (2-3) used two big innings to salvage the split, scoring five runs in the fourth and seven more in the sixth.


Graham McOsker '20 and Kenny Collins '17 both hit two-run triples to highlight Hamilton's five-run fourth that erased Dickinson's 3-0 advantage.

The Red Devils scored five runs over the next two innings in retake the lead. Trailing 8-5 in the bottom of the sixth, the Continentals exploded for seven runs; Hamilton collected just two hits in the inning, capitalizing on two walks and a hit batter, three Dickinson errors and a pair of wild pitches.

Andrew Haser '17 singled home Robert Morris '17 and Kenny Collins to cut the deficit to a run. Chris Collins '17 reached on an error and Brett Mele '17 drew a walk to load the bases. Sam Rowley '20 was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run and Chris Collins and Mele scored on consecutive wild pitches. The final Hamilton runs scored on a dropped pop-up.

Brett Sandford '19 retired Dickinson in order in the seventh. Sandford relieved Kenny Gray '20, who earned his first collegiate win with an inning of work out of the bullpen.

Dickinson's comeback started in the fifth when Jon Chudacoff and Ben Carter hit RBI doubles. The Red Devils tied the score with three two-out runs in the sixth. David Farnham's sacrifice fly and a wild pitch brought home two runs before Alex Jacobson's pinch-hit double scored Rick Hopkins with the tying run.

Kenny Collins finished with three hits and McOsker added two hits, two runs scored and two driven in.

Robbie Thompson, Ben Carter and Max Matilsky each had two of Dickinson's 10 hits.

In game one the Red Devils scored four times in their last two times at bat to pull away from a one-run game.

The Continentals scored their run in the top of the seventh. Ian Nish '19 was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Chris Collins followed with an infield single. After both runners moved up an infield groundout, pinch-hitter Craig Sandford '19 plated Nish with a ground ball to second but Dickinson retired the next batter to end the game.

Chris Collins had two of Hamilton's three hits.

Chudacoff singled home Farnham in the first to put Dickinson up early.  In the fifth Farnham scored on a balk and Brian Reilly singled in Rick Hopkins. An inning later Austin Sumners hit a two-run inside-the-park home run.

Billy O'Neill earned the win with a complete-game three-hitter.

The Continentals is are idle until Monday, when they open NESCAC West Division play with a doubleheader against Bowdoin in Auburndale.
