Women's lacrosse hands No. 14 Bowdoin its first loss

Hamilton College's Jackie Cuddy '18 scored a career-high five goals and led the Continentals to a 12-7 NESCAC win against nationally ranked No. 14 Bowdoin College at Ann Dever Field in Englewood, Fla., on Thursday night.

Cuddy leads Hamilton (2-3, 2-1 NESCAC) with eight goals this year. She also caused two turnovers. Morgan Fletcher '17 tallied three goals and recorded the 100th point of her career with the Continentals. Fletcher has a team-high 11 points, and she won two draw controls.

Kara Pooley '19 chipped in a pair of goals and two draw controls, Darby Philbrick '18 posted two draw controls and two caused turnovers and Casey File '17 added two ground balls and two caused turnovers for Hamilton. Hannah Burrall '19 made five saves.

Hannah Hirschfeld paced the Polar Bears (3-1, 1-1) with two goals. Mettler Growney registered a goal, an assist and two ground balls. Kelsey Gallagher also contributed one goal and one helper. Annie Glenn won four draw controls and Halsey McKinney corralled three more. Grace DeWald scooped up two ground balls and caused two turnovers, and Kayli Weiss stopped four shots.

Bowdoin held a 5-2 advantage midway through the first half but the Continentals exploded for five goals in a span of just over two minutes and took the lead for good at 7-5 at the break. After the Polar Bears scored a man-up goal to pull within a goal early in the second half, Hamilton clinched the victory with four straight goals midway through the period. Cuddy scored four of the Continentals' five goals in the second half, including the last one that made it 12-7 with 2:35 left.

Bowdoin jumped out to a 3-0 lead after Growney's free-position goal with 19:36 remaining in the first half. Philbrick won the ensuing draw control and Cuddy scored on a free-position shot 32 seconds later. Pooley pulled Hamilton within a goal on another free-position shot with 15:34 to go. The Continentals scored five goals on 10 free-position shots.

Free-position goals by Bowdoin's Natalie Rudin and Hirschfeld put the Polar Bears back up by three goals with 11:49 left. Pooley won the next draw and Philbrick notched her sixth goal 25 seconds later. Fletcher celebrated her 100th point on a free-position goal with 10:40 remaining and File tallied her sixth goal and tied the score on another free-position shot 23 seconds later. Pooley's unassisted goal with 9:18 to go put Hamilton ahead for good, and Fletcher captured the ensuing draw and scored to make it 7-5 just 10 seconds later.

Gallagher cut Bowdoin's deficit in half on a man-up goal after a feed from Growney with 23:02 left. After that it was the Jackie Cuddy show as she scored an unassisted goal 50 seconds later, found the back of the net on a free-position shot with 19:43 remaining and came up with another unassisted tally just under four minutes later. Fletcher gave the Continentals an 11-6 cushion on an unassisted goal with 10:25 to go and secured a win against the Polar Bears for the second year in a row.

Hamilton returns to the wintry weather of Central New York for a non-conference game against Skidmore College on Tuesday, March 21 on Steuben Field at 5 p.m.
