Philbrick '18, Cuddy '18 score two goals each in Hamilton setback

Box Score

Wesleyan University scored the last three goals and the Cardinals rallied for an 8-7 NESCAC win against the nationally ranked No. 13 Hamilton College Continentals inside Syracuse University's Carrier Dome on Saturday afternoon.

Hamilton (1-2, 1-1 NESCAC) held a 7-5 advantage after an unassisted goal by Alex Hendry '19 with 12:57 left in the second half. Wesleyan scored three times in the final 10:07 and pulled out the victory.

Jackie Cuddy '18 and Darby Philbrick '18 led the Continentals' offense with two goals apiece. Morgan Fletcher '17 was credited with two assists and won four draw controls. Fletcher needs three points to reach the 100-point milestone for her career. Taylor Ryan '17 scooped up three ground balls and Kara Pooley '19 and Fletcher caused two turnovers apiece. Hannah Burrall '19 started in goal and made three saves. Hannah Rubin '17 started the second half and stopped four shots in the final 30 minutes.

The Cardinals (3-0, 2-0) posted their first win in seven tries against Hamilton, and Wesleyan already has two victories against Top 20 teams this season. Liana Mathias paced the Cardinals' offense with two goals and two assists. Abby Manning and Meredith Smith tallied two goals apiece, and Rachel Aronow added one goal and one helper. Manning leads the team with 11 goals. Amy Breitfeller led all players with six ground balls and Caroline Sgaglione caused three turnovers. Grace McCann recorded four of her five saves in the first half.

Abigail Horst pulled Wesleyan within a goal at 7-6 on an unassisted goal with 10:07 remaining. Smith tied the score for the third time on a nice feed from Mathias with 6:11 to go and Mathias gave the Cardinals their first lead on an unassisted goal with 4:36 left.

Cuddy won the ensuing draw control but Hamilton turned the ball over and Wesleyan called a timeout with 3:39 remaining. The Cardinals put together a successful clear and held the ball for the next three-plus minutes. Finally, Casey File '17 forced a turnover with about 20 seconds to go and Ryan scooped up the ground ball. The Continentals quickly moved the ball up the field despite being down a player after a yellow card was issued with 23 seconds left, and Hamilton called its final timeout with 2.4 seconds remaining. The Continentals couldn't squeeze off the game-tying shot before the final horn sounded.

Hamilton held a 5-2 lead at the break but Aronow scored on a free-position shot with 26:38 to go and Smith made it 5-4 on another free-position goal with 16:39 left. Philbrick restored the Continentals' two-goal cushion on a free-position goal with 14:51 remaining before Mathias drew Wesleyan within one again on an unassisted tally just 68 seconds later. The Cardinals committed just three turnovers and held a 13-4 shot advantage in the second half.

The teams traded goals during the opening 12:35 of the first half with Cuddy and Philbrick scoring for Hamilton and Manning notching both of her goals for Wesleyan. The Continentals scored the last three goals of the half. File scored a man-up goal from close range on a nice pass in traffic from Fletcher, and Cuddy and Tatiana Bradley '19 found the back of the net on free-position shots. Bradley's goal -- the third of her Hamilton career -- gave the Continentals a three-goal cushion with 5:52 to go in the half. Hamilton scored four goals on five free-position shots. The Continentals forced the Cardinals into four failed clears in the opening 30 minutes.
