No. 3 seed Hamilton (14-8-3) hosted its first NESCAC championship quarterfinal since 2007 as the Continentals achieved their highest seeding in the event's history. Hamilton set a program record with its 14 victories this season. The Continentals are fifth in Division III in scoring defense with 1.28 goals allowed per game and third in penalty kill at 92.5 percent. Hamilton held Bowdoin scoreless on seven power-play chances.
The Polar Bears' 1-0 win marked the third time the teams played a one-goal game this season. They split their season series at Sage Rink as Bowdoin edged the Continentals 2-1 on Feb. 3, and Hamilton erased a two-goal deficit in the third period en route to a 3-2 overtime win on Feb. 4.
Sheehan notched the game-winner after sustained pressure by the Polar Bears in their offensive zone. The Continentals' goaltender Sam Walther '18 turned a shot away and directed the puck off to her right. Jess Cloutier picked up the loose puck and skated over to the left-side boards where she dropped it off for Sheehan, who found Marissa Fichter behind the goal. Fichter carried the puck to the faceoff dot in the right circle, turned and sent the puck towards the slot. Sheehan redirected the puck past a lunging Walther and into the net from the top of the crease for her second goal this season. Fichter picked up her fourth assist.
The goaltenders stole the show for the first 94 minutes as Walther made 49 saves and Kerri St. Denis stopped 41 shots for her sixth shutout. Walther is fourth in the NESCAC with a 1.27 goals against average and .952 save percentage. She broke her own team records in both categories and set another with eight shutouts this season.
Bowdoin had a great chance to score midway through the first period as the Polar Bears had a 5-on-3 power play for 67 seconds. Walther made five stops during that 5-on-3 opportunity. Bowdoin's Julie Dachille -- the team's leader in goals -- had a fantastic short-handed scoring chance late in the period but Walther stuffed her on a breakaway. The Polar Bears held a 14-3 shot advantage during the opening 20 minutes.
Hamilton turned the tables on Bowdoin in the second period and outshot the Polar Bears 15-4. Bowdoin held an 11-9 edge in shots in the third period and posted a 21-14 advantage in the overtime periods.
