Walther '18 leads women's hockey in scoreless tie at Conn. College

Hamilton College's Sam Walther '18 made 31 saves and the Continentals played the Connecticut College Camels to a 0-0 tie at Conn. College's Dayton Arena on Friday night.

Hamilton (14-6-3, 9-4-2 NESCAC) is in second place in the NESCAC standings with one game remaining. The Continentals and the Camels play in New London, Conn., again on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m. Connecticut Coll. is in third place in the conference standings with a 9-5-1 record.

Hamilton is ranked eighth in the USCHO.com Division III Top 10 poll and ninth in the D3hockey.com Top 10 poll. The Continentals are 6-1-1 in their last eight games and 9-2-2 away from home this season. The Camels are receiving votes in both polls.

Walther is tied for the NCAA Division III lead with eight shutouts. She is third with a .955 save percentage and seventh with a 1.14 goals against average. Walther has been nearly invincible in NESCAC competition (0.92 GAA, .965 save pct.). Hamilton has played two scoreless ties this season.

Connecticut Coll. (13-7-3) had its only power play midway through the third period when it outshot the Continentals, 11-4. Katherine Chester stopped 23 shots including 10 in the second period.

Hamilton had power-play chances with 2:16 left in the third period and again with 1:43 remaining in overtime. The Continentals had three shots to the Camels' one during the extra period.

Connecticut Coll. had a great chance to take the lead at the 14:05 mark of the second period. Ashley Carbone skated through the neutral zone and tried to beat Walther to the near post from point-blank range but Walther was able to come up with one of her nine stops in the frame to keep the game scoreless. Steph Izzi nearly put the Camels on top with a wrist shot from the mid-slot area later in the period. Walther was able to elevate and make a nice stick save.

Connecticut Coll. had the best scoring chance in the opening moments of overtime. Izzi broke in on a 2-on-1 and made a pass through the slot to Samantha Estes at the far post. Estes tried to one-time a shot past Walther but she came out and cut off the angle for her biggest stop of the night.
