Box Score Hamilton College's Sam Walther '18 made 32 saves in the Continentals' 1-0 NESCAC win against Amherst College at Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink on Saturday afternoon.
The Continentals (14-6-2, 9-4-1 NESCAC) set a program record with their 14th win this season. Hamilton is in first place in the conference standings after winning three straight and six of its last seven. The Continentals are receiving votes in both the D3hockey.com and USCHO.com Division III Top 10 polls.
Amherst (11-7-4, 5-5-4) had lost just once in its previous 11 games before the Purple and White were swept this weekend by Hamilton. Amherst is ranked ninth in the USCHO.com poll and received votes in the D3hockey.com poll. The Purple and White are tied for sixth place in the conference standings.
Walther is tied for the lead in Division III with her team-record seven shutouts. She is fourth with a .953 save percentage and eighth with a 1.20 goals against average. Her numbers are even better in conference games with a 1.00 GAA and .962 save percentage.
Emily Williams '19 scored the game's only goal with 7:12 left in the third period. A Continentals power play ended with 7:40 remaining but Hamilton managed to keep the puck in Amherst's defensive zone. After a lengthy battle for the puck along the left-side boards, Katie Parkman '17 gained possession and passed to Michaela Giuttari '20 above the left circle. Williams deflected Giuttari's shot past Bailey Plaman (19 saves) and into the back of the net for her fourth goal.
Giuttari leads the NESCAC in first-year scoring with 11 points. Parkman is third in the conference with 21 points, tied for fifth with nine goals and tied for third with 12 assists.
The Purple and White pulled Plaman for an extra skater for the final 68 seconds and they had a 6-on-4 situation for the last eight seconds after one of the Continentals was sent off for tripping.
Amherst held a 32-20 shot advantage but was 0-for-4 on the power play. Hamilton was held scoreless on just two opportunities.
The Continentals travel to Connecticut College for a NESCAC game on Friday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m.
