Dejà vu all over again; women's hockey stuns No. 9 Amherst in OT

Box Score

For the second time in as many weeks, the Hamilton College women's hockey team erased a 2-0 third-period deficit on the way to a 3-2 overtime win. The Continentals (13-6-2, 8-4-1 NESCAC) stunned visiting Amherst College with two goals in the final 1:46 of regulation, then won in overtime on a goal by Sara Taffe '17 in a Friday night NESCAC game at Russell Sage Rink.

With at least four games left Hamilton has already tied the school record for wins in a season set by the 2002-03 team and matched by the 2012-13 edition.

Katie Parkman '17 scored both Continental goals in the third, tying the score with 33 seconds left.

Taffe had also scored the OT game winner in Saturday's come-from-behind win over Bowdoin. The two goals are her first of the season. Her goal to win Friday's game came with just 49 seconds left in the extra session and the Continentals skating on a power play for the first time in the game. Caroline Knop '18 and Megan Ahern '17 assisted on the play. Ahern's assist was her 10th of the season; she's second on the team to Parkman, who now has a team-leading 20 points.

The Continental comeback started with under two minutes to go in the third period. After calling their timeout at the 18:10 mark they won the ensuing draw, with Parkman getting the puck and netting her eighth goal of the winter.

After Amherst's timeout (which came at 18:46), Hamilton pulled goaltender Sam Walther '18 and took advantage of the extra skater, peppering Amherst's net with shots before Parkman tied the score. Her goal came just seconds after the game's officials huddled to decide whether or not a Hamilton shot that got past Amherst goaltender Sabrina Dobbins (33 saves) actually crossed the goal line, before ruling that it had not. Walther finished with 41 stops.

Andrea Rockey '19 assisted on both Hamilton goals in the third period, and Kelli Mackey '19 had an assist on the first score.

Amherst took an early lead when Jamie McNamara scored her third goal of the season at the 12:30 mark of the first. Early in the third, the visitors added to their lead with Alex Toupal scoring her NESCAC-best 17th goal 6:46 in.

Amherst, who's now 11-6-4 overall and 5-4-4 in NESCAC action, is ranked ninth nationally by USCHO.com.

The teams conclude their weekend series Saturday with a 3 p.m. match-up.
