Box Score Michaela Giuttari '20 recorded a career-high four points as the Hamilton College women's hockey team defeated Williams College 6-2 at Lansing Chapman Rink in Williamstown, Mass., on Friday night.
The Ephs totaled seven penalties for 14 minutes compared to Hamilton's one for two minutes, and the Continentals capitalized with three power-play goals.
Missy Segall '21 opened the floodgates for Hamilton with her first collegiate goal 6:26 into the first period. Olivia Hawes '19 gathered the rebound in the corner and passed to Caroline Knop '18 at the point. Knop passed right back to Hawes at the left face-off dot. Hawes fired a pass across the ice that deflected perfectly off a Williams skate right to Segall in the slot. Segall ripped a shot inside the right post for the power-play goal.
Stephanie DiPietro '18 scored the eighth goal of her Hamilton career 3:08 later. Andrea Rockey '19 took a shot that went just left of the net and bounced off the boards onto the stick of Karina Sirabian '21. Williams goalie Marissa Anderson (15 saves) denied Sirabian's initial shot, but DiPietro was right there to put the puck past Anderson on the 5-on-3 power play.
Sam Walther '18 (31 saves) showed her senior goaltending experience when she stopped four shots in 20 seconds during the final two minutes of the first period, maintaining Hamilton's 2-0 lead at the end of the first.
Williams started the second period in the penalty box, giving Hamilton a 5-on-4 advantage when Kate Piacenza '21 notched her first collegiate goal just 36 seconds after the face-off. Knop delivered the pass to Emily Williams '19 in the slot. Williams turned and delivered a perfect pass to Piacenza waiting at the right post, and Piacenza placed her shot just under Anderson's glove.
At 11:55 of the second period, Piacenza gathered the puck and skated around the Williams goal, finding Giuttari in front of the net. Giuttari took the initial shot and Hawes was there to put away the rebound between the legs of Anderson.
Williams broke the shutout with just 1:03 left in the second with a goal from Annie Rush, but Giuttari blocked the momentum shift with just 14 seconds left in the period. There was a scrum in the left corner where Giuttari picked out the puck, split the legs of the defender and sniped a backhander into the upper-right corner of the net. Hamilton entered the locker room with a 5-1 edge.
Giuttari picked up right where she left off with her second goal of the night 2:01 into the third period. The Continental defense formulated a quick breakout and hit Giuttari on the left side of the ice. Giuttari used her speed to outmaneuver the Eph defender, recording her fourth point of the night with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle.
Williams cut the Hamilton lead to four less than a minute later with a goal from Brynn Puppe. Neither team scored again and Hamilton (1-0 overall) earned its first NESCAC victory of the 2017-18 season.
The Continentals are back on the ice against Williams on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. in Williamstown, Mass., before their home opener against Morrisville State on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 1 p.m. in Russell Sage Rink.
