Overtime loss snaps women's hockey winning streak

Box Score

The Hamilton College women's hockey team's winning streak ended at four games following a 4-3 overtime loss to Sacred Heart University in Friday afternoon's opening round of the Saint Michael's DoubleTree Classic at Cairns Arena.

The Pioneers forced overtime by scoring with 64 seconds left in the third period then won the game with 35 seconds remaining in overtime. The Continentals, who'd been receiving votes in both national polls, are now 5-3-0.

Hamilton rallied twice to tie the score before taking the lead for the first time with 2:04 to go on a goal by Andrea Rockey '19.

Sacred Heart (9-6-1 overall) killed a Hamilton power play midway through the five-minute overtime, then – 21 seconds after returning to full strength – notched the win on a goal by Taylor Moreland.

Moreland's goal, her 14th of the year, was assisted by Carly Radovich.

Rockey's third goal of the season, which put the Continentals up 3-2, was assisted by Alayna Trice '20 and Caroline Knop '18. The Pioneers pulled goaltender Devan Kane 42 seconds later, setting up Olivia Bryant's game-tying goal.

Sacred Heart opened the scoring 3:11 into the first period on a power-play goal by Jayne Lewis. Lewis' go-ahead goal marked the first time the Continental penalty-killing unit gave up a goal all season – Hamilton was the last team at any level or any gender of college hockey to allow a power-play goal.

Emily Williams '19 tied the game for Hamilton 6:42 into the second, scoring her second goal of the year.

The teams traded goals in the first 10 minutes of the final period, starting with Megan Finley's sixth goal of the year for Sacred Heart at the 3:01 mark.

The Continentals pulled even 6:07 later on a goal by Olivia Hawes '19, who had assisted on Williams' score. Megan Ahern '17, Hamilton's leader in points, collected her team-best seventh assist.

Sam Walther '18 made 30 saves for Hamilton and Kane stopped 29 shots for the win.

The Continentals wrap up tournament play Saturday with a 1 p.m. game against Plymouth State.
