Another shutout for women's hockey

Box Score

The Hamilton College women's hockey team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 4-0 win over the visiting SUNY Cortland Red Dragons Tuesday night at Russell Sage Rink. The Continentals are now 9-5-2 overall.

Hamilton broke open a one-goal game with three third-period goals and Sammy Johnson '20 shut out the visitors in her first collegiate start.

Johnson made 11 of her 17 saves in the final period. She was called on to stop just six Cortland shots over the first 40 minutes as the hosts outshot the Red Dragons 27-6 in the first two periods. Her best save came on her first chance; Cortland's Ally Edwards stole the puck at center ice to set up a breakaway but her high shot was knocked away by Johnson.

The Continentals scored three times in less than 10 minutes in the third. Katie Parkman '17 started the outburst 2:30 into the period, tallying her team-leading seventh goal of the season. She gathered the puck at the left circle and beat Red Dragon goaltender Kelly Farinella for a 2-0 Hamilton lead.

Andrea Rockey '19 added to the lead 3:07 later, matching Parkman with her seventh goal. Following a scrum in front of the net, Michaela Giuttari '20 played the puck to Rockey who pushed it into the net from close range.

Caroline Knop '18 capped the scoring with 7:41 remaining, taking a pass from Timary Malley '20 and turning it into her second goal this winter. Malley's assist was her first collegiate point.

Jenna Jewell '19 followed a scoreless opening period with the only score of the second. She scored on a rebound with 3:32 left after a shot by Gillian Roberts '19 was saved. From in front of the net, Jewell sent a high shot over Farinella's shoulder and in.

Farinella finished with 39 saves for Cortland (2-14-0).

Hamilton killed all five Cortland power plays; the Continentals rank second in Division III, allowing just two power-play goals in 49 tries.

With nothing but NESCAC games ahead of them, the Continentals begin play with a two-game series at Middlebury this weekend, facing the hosts Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m. The Panthers are ranked sixth by D3hockey.com and seventh by USCHO.com.
