Box Score The Hamilton College baseball team closed out the 2016 season in record-setting fashion, hammering host Utica College 19-9 in the 29th Annual Jackie Robinson Game.
The Continentals finish the year 16-14, marking the third time in four seasons that they've reached that total – a school-record for victories in a season.
Hamilton's 19 runs matched the highest total scored in a Jackie Robinson Game, tying the record the Continentals set in a 19-5 win in the 2009 contest.
Cole Dreyfuss '16 was named Hamilton's MVP of the game after earning his sixth win of the season, tying another school record.
Ryan Wolfsberg '17 scored four runs in the game; he finished the season with a school-record 31 runs scored. Wolfsberg drove in four runs and finished with a single, a double and a home run. He was one of five Continentals who pounded out three hits each.
Andrew Haser '17 drove in two runs, finishing the season with a school-record 33 driven in.
The Continentals scored eight runs in the first two innings. Two first-inning runs scored on the first of Utica's three errors after Haser drew a bases-loaded walk.
A two-run home run by Wolfsberg – his fourth of the season and the ninth of his career – started the visitors' five-run second. A run-scoring single by Mike Chiseri '16, a sacrifice fly by Chris Collins '17 and a Pioneer wild pitch followed.
After Utica scored single runs in the second and third, Hamilton pushed its lead to 12-2 on four runs in the fifth. Brian Ferrell '16 singled in a pair of runs, Brett Mele '17 doubled home a run and David Rose '16 singled in a run.
Dreyfuss (6-2) allowed just two earned runs over his 5.1 innings. He struck out five and raised his collegiate mark to 15-9. His career total of 15 wins are one short of the program record.
Wolfsberg doubled home a pair of runs in the ninth. He finished the season batting .418 with an on-base percentage of .500 and a slugging percentage of .645. He scored his school-record 31st run on a single by Mele and the Continentals closed out the scoring on a double by Ian Nish '19 that brought home pinch-runner Griffin Small '17.
Spencer Vogelbach '18 pitched the last 3.2 innings and picked up his second collegiate save, fanning five Pioneers while allowing one earned run.
Mele, Rose, Zack Becker '16 and Jordan Northrup '19 each had three hits. Ferrell, Collins and Mele drove in two runs apiece and Mele scored four runs.
Brandon Thomas went three for four to lead the Pioneers, who've lost four in a row. Tim Quinlan had a pair of hits, including a solo home run to put Utica (8-23-1 overall) on the scoreboard in the second.
