Box Score 2 The Hamilton College baseball team split a NESCAC West Division doubleheader at Amherst Saturday, knocking off the hosts (who are ranked 21st in the latest national coaches' poll) 6-2 in the opener before losing game two 8-7 in 10 innings.
Cole Dreyfuss '16 threw a complete-game two-hitter in game one as the Continentals broke a 1-1 tie with four sixth-inning runs. Hamilton wraps up the three-game weekend series with a 10-7 overall mark and a 1-2 record in the NESCAC West. Amherst is now 12-3, 2-1.
Dreyfuss picked up his team-leading third win of the season, holding Amherst hitless over the final 5.2 innings. He struck out two and raised his career record to 12-8.
Hamilton snapped a 1-1 tie by taking advantage of three walks, two Amherst errors and a passed ball to score four times in the top of the sixth. Kenny Collins '17 singled to bring in the final run after David Rose '16 and Dean Rosenberg '18 scored on errors and Mike Chiseri '16 came home on a double-play groundout.
Ferrell scored the Continentals' first run on a double by Ryan Wolfsberg '17 in the fifth that tied the score.
Wolfsberg, who's second on the team with 14 runs batted in, singled in a run in the seventh. Rose, Wolfsberg and Brian Ferrell '16 each had two of Hamilton's 10 hits.
Anthony Spina drove in both Amherst runs.
In game two, Hamilton held leads of 4-1 and 6-4, then tied the game in the seventh after Amherst went up 7-6 in the bottom of the sixth. Jordan Northrup '19 brought home the tying run with a sacrifice fly that scored Andrew Haser '17.
Northrup's RBI single started Hamilton's four-run second. Wolfsberg's sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single by Brett Mele '17 followed. Mele added an RBI single in the fourth as the Continentals tacked on two more runs.
Amherst scored a pair of unearned runs in the third, capitalizing on three Hamilton errors. The hosts scored a run in the first to take an early lead.
In the home sixth, Ariel Kenney doubled home the tying run and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Amherst pushed across the winning run in the 10th after a single by Conner Gunn and walks to Spina and Jonathan Ramirez loaded the bases with no outs, setting up a walk-off hit by Joe Feldman.
Collins reached base three times for Hamilton.
The Continentals are scheduled to face Cazenovia Monday in a non-league game at Rome's DeLutis Field.
