Hamilton hammers three homers in split with Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Hamilton College baseball team split a NESCAC West Division doubleheader with visiting Wesleyan University Saturday at Royce Field. The Continentals won game one 5-2 before the visiting Cardinals rallied for a 10-inning win in the nightcap by a 6-4 score.

A pair of home runs and a complete-game effort by Cole Dreyfuss '16 paced Hamilton (14-10, 3-5 NESCAC West) to a 5-2 victory in the opener. David Rose '16 and Dean Rosenberg '18 both hit their first home runs of the season.

Dreyfuss allowed five hits in earning his third complete-game win over a divisional rival in four weeks. He matched a season high with six strikeouts and allowed only two runners past first base over the final five innings. His fifth win of the year came against a Cardinal team that entered the day ranked third nationally in batting average, seventh in on-base percentage and 16th in slugging percentage.

With five wins this season, Dreyfuss is within one victory of tying Hamilton's single-season record. He raised his career record to 14-8, passing Max Foster for sole possession of second place on the program's all-time list.

Rosenberg hit his second career home run in the bottom of the second to tie the score at 2-2. Rose's first collegiate homer was a two-run shot in the sixth that stretched the hosts' lead to 5-2.

Hamilton scored the winning run in the fourth inning when Rose hit a double to the base of the fence in straightaway center field that scored Mike Chiseri '16 from first base.

The Continentals took a 1-0 lead just three batters into the first after Kenny Collins '17 followed a Jordan Northrup '19 single with a run-scoring double down the left field line.

Wesleyan (17-9, 4-4 NESCAC West) – who is receiving votes in both national polls this week – went ahead with a pair of second-inning runs but were held to two hits the rest of the way.

One-out singles by Eric Jones and Ellis Schaefer in the sixth put the go-ahead run on base, but Dreyfuss set down the next two batters to work out of the jam.

Rose had two of Hamilton's six hits off Wesleyan's Peter Rantz, who took the loss in a complete-game performance.

In the second game the Cardinals tied the score with a run in the top of the ninth then scored the winning runs on a one-out, two-run home run by Jones in the 10th.

Ryan Earle picked up his first win, facing just the minimum six batters over two innings of relief. The only baserunner he allowed – a two-out walk in the bottom of the ninth – was erased by a caught stealing.

Wesleyan strung together four hits to score the tying run in the ninth and nearly took the lead. After Andrew Keith doubled and went to third on a groundout to third by Guy Davidson, Jordan Farber singled through the left side to tie the score. A single by Marco Baratta loaded the bases but the Continental infield turned a double play to keep the score tied 4-4.

Ryan Wolfsberg '17 hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to give the Continentals their first lead. Rose led off with a single, and one out later Brian Ferrell '16 was hit by a pitch to set up Rosenberg's third home run of the season, which erased Wesleyan's 2-0 lead.

The teams traded seventh-inning runs: Matt Jeye plated the tying run with a two-out single down the left field line before the Continentals retook the lead in the bottom of the inning. Wolfsberg walked with one out and was sacrificed to second. Pinch-hitter Cooper Halpern '19 singled to left to bring Wolfsberg in.

Davidson led Wesleyan with three hits. Jeye and Baratta had two apiece. Danny Rose drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth for the game's first run and Schaefer followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Cardinals up 2-0.

Collins and Northrup both had a pair of hits for Hamilton.

The teams conclude their series with a single game Sunday at noon.
