No. 11 women's lacrosse wins big at home

Box Score

Hamilton College scored the first nine goals and the nationally ranked No. 11 Continentals cruised to a 20-6 NESCAC win against the Connecticut College Camels at Hamilton's Steuben Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Continentals (9-3, 5-3 NESCAC) scored 20 goals in a game for the first time since they won 21-12 at SUNY Oneonta on March 14, 2010. Hamilton clinched a spot in the 2016 NESCAC Women's Lacrosse Championship quarterfinals, which will be played on April 30.

Connecticut Coll. (5-8, 1-7) lost its fourth straight game -- all on the road. The 20 goals are the most the Camels have allowed this year.

Casey File '17 scored a career-high four goals and added four draw controls for the Continentals. Darby Philbrick '18 chipped in three goals and an assist, and Morgan Fletcher '17 contributed two goals and two helpers.

Hamilton's Kara Pooley '19 filled the stat sheet with two goals, four draw controls, three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Caroline McCarthy '16 and Nora Klemmer '17 added one goal and one assist apiece. McCarthy is second in the NESCAC with 22 assists. Eight other players posted one point each, including Morgan Foster '19 and Tatiana Bradley '19, who scored their first collegiate goals.

The Continentals entered the day ranked 24th in Division III in scoring defense. Hannah Burrall '19 started in goal and played the first half. Hannah Rubin '17 played the first 10 minutes of the second half and Eleni Neyland '18 made two saves the rest of the way.

Tina Balzotti scored two goals, Annie Cornbrooks was credited with a pair of assists and Erin Moran won five draw controls for the Camels. Meg Raskin made four saves in 46-plus minutes in goal and Megan Mullin stopped one shot.

Hamilton jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first 10 minutes against Williams College on Tuesday and got off to another quick start against Connecticut College. File scored three times in the opening 7:30 and the Continentals led 9-0 after a free-position goal by Philbrick with 19:11 left in the first half.

Balzotti put the Camels on the scoreboard on a free-position goal with 17:56 remaining in the half but goals by Fletcher and Pooley gave Hamilton an 11-1 advantage with 15:07 to go. Cassidy Lynch made it 11-2 with 12:58 left before the Continentals embarked on another big run.

Hamilton bridged the first and second halves with seven goals in a row by seven players. McCarthy found File in front of the Connecticut Coll. goal with a nice pass to put the Continentals up by 10 again just 15 seconds after Lynch's goal. The teams played the rest of the game with a running clock.

Hamilton led 17-2 at the break and dominated every facet of the first 30 minutes. The Continentals enjoyed a 25-3 shot advantage, scooped up 11 ground balls to just one for the Camels, won the draw control battle, 14-6, and committed one turnover to nine for Connecticut College in the first half.

Klemmer's first goal this season capped the seven-goal run and gave Hamilton an 18-2 cushion 3:14 into the second half. The Continentals have won eight games in a row against the Camels.

Hamilton travels to No. 2 Middlebury College for another conference game on Sunday, April 17, at 2 p.m. Connecticut Coll. hosts Bates College in NESCAC action on Saturday, April 23.
