No. 11 Hamilton eases past Williams for NESCAC win

Box Score

Hamilton College jumped out to a 6-0 lead and the nationally ranked No. 11 Continentals cruised to a 14-4 NESCAC win against the Williams College Ephs at Hamilton's Steuben Field on Tuesday.

The Continentals (8-3, 4-3 NESCAC) evened the all-time series at four wins apiece. The 10-goal difference is the largest margin of victory for either team in the eight games.

Hamilton doubled up Williams in shots, 26-13, and held a 15-11 advantage in ground balls. The Ephs (4-7, 2-5), who have lost four straight, were successful 13 times on 20 clear attempts and committed 17 turnovers.

Casey File '17 and Jackie Cuddy '18 tied career highs with three goals apiece for the Continentals. Morgan Fletcher '17 and Margaret Gabriel '16 added two goals and an assist apiece. Fletcher leads the team with 24 goals. Kara Pooley '19 and Darby Philbrick '18 chipped in two goals apiece and Caroline McCarthy '16 tied a career best with four assists. McCarthy is third in the NESCAC with 21 helpers.

Philbrick won four draw controls and Gabriel and Hannah Withiam '16 recorded three ground balls and three caused turnovers apiece. Hannah Burrall '19 started in goal and made two saves during the first half. Hannah Rubin '17 started the second half and stopped three shots in 26-plus minutes.

For Williams, Anne Rehfuss posted a goal and two assists, and Natalie Gill scored twice. Jenna Chodos tallied her 18th goal this year and won three draw controls. Molly Belk scooped up a game-high five ground balls and caused two turnovers. Margaret Draper started in goal and made five saves in 40-plus minutes. Ana Alvarenga stopped two shots in the final 19:56. Emma Tenbarge, who led the team with 18 goals entering the game, did not play due to injury.

File began the scoring 2:38 into the first half and Cuddy made it 2-0 about two minutes later. Fletcher and Gabriel scored goals 1:11 apart and, after File scored on a feed from McCarthy to make it 5-0, the Ephs called a timeout with 20:20 left. At that point, Williams still hadn't ventured into its offensive end. Pooley gave Hamilton a six-goal cushion on a free-position shot with 17:26 remaining.

Gill finally put the Ephs on the scoreboard with 16:15 to go. Philbrick restored the six-goal lead on a free-position shot with 13:52 left and Fletcher made it 8-1 with 8:11 remaining. Chodos scored on a pass from Rehfuss with 6:21 to go and the Continentals took an 8-2 advantage into the break. Williams didn't score again until the final four minutes of the second half.

Hamilton eliminated any hopes of an Ephs comeback by scoring four times in the first 4:02 of the second half. Gabriel found the back of the net 70 seconds after halftime and Philbrick notched the Continentals' 10th goal of the day 1:14 later. File scored a free-position goal for an 11-2 cushion and Cuddy's goal with 25:58 left gave Hamilton a 10-goal lead and started the running clock, which remained in effect for the rest of the game.

The Continentals host Connecticut College for another conference game on Saturday, April 16 at noon.
