Box Score Hamilton College scored the first two goals and never trailed in a 12-4 non-conference win against the William Smith College Herons at William Smith's Boswell Field on Wednesday.
The nationally ranked No. 13 Continentals (1-1 overall) spanned the first and second halves with eight straight goals and cruised to their first victory of 2016. Hamilton has won its last 11 games against the Herons. William Smith (0-3) is still searching for its first win this season.
Kara Pooley '19 helped lead Hamilton with three goals and three caused turnovers in just her second collegiate contest. Darby Philbrick '18 and 2015 All-American Morgan Fletcher '17 chipped in three goals apiece.
Caroline McCarthy '16 posted two goals and an assist, and Casey File '17 tallied one goal and won a game-high five draw controls for the Continentals. On defense, Hannah Withiam '16 led all players with four ground balls and caused two turnovers. Hannah Rubin '17 started in goal and made five saves in the first half. Hannah Burrall '19 made five stops in the second half.
Hannah Connolly paced William Smith with a goal and an assist, and Kelsi Carr added a goal and three draw controls. Sarah Honan turned away 10 shots in 36-plus minutes and Allie O'Hara made four saves the rest of the way.
Hamilton finished with a 30-20 shot advantage and won 13 draw controls to just five for the Herons. The Continentals scored four free-position goals on nine shots while William Smith took just one free-position shot.
Fletcher scored the game's first goal and File made it 2-0 on a feed from Margaret Gabriel '16 with 26:42 left. Carr cut the Herons' deficit in half but Fletcher restored Hamilton's two-goal cushion with 24:18 remaining. Connolly pulled William Smith within a goal with 11:52 to go. The Continentals shut down the Herons' offense for the next 26-plus minutes and put the game out of reach with an 8-0 run.
Pooley started the spurt with a free-position goal and Philbrick scored another one to make it 5-2 with 8:43 left. McCarthy scored an unassisted goal with 2:44 remaining and Hamilton went into the break with a 6-2 advantage.
Fletcher gave the Continentals a five-goal lead early in the second half and Pooley made it 8-2 with 23:06 to go. Philbrick scored 33 seconds later and added a free-position goal with 19:29 left. McCarthy capped the run and made it 11-2 on a free-position goal with 15:55 remaining.
Hamilton travels to Wesleyan University for a NESCAC game on Saturday, March 12, at 1 p.m.
