Baseball splits twinbill with Bowdoin

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Hamilton College baseball team stretched its winning streak to five, splitting a doubleheader with Bowdoin College Wednesday in Winter Haven, Fla. The Continentals won the opener 14-8 before dropping game two 4-1.

Hamilton is now 8-4 on the season; the Continentals' win in game one marked the first loss of the season for the Polar Bears (8-1).

The Continentals jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first contest, holding on for the win as Bowdoin scored five times in the final inning.

David Rose '16 doubled twice, driving in three runs. Kenny Collins '17 and Brian Ferrell '16 both had three runs batted in; Collins and Ryan Wolfsberg '17 had three hits apiece.

Cole Dreyfuss '16 earned the win, allowing just one earned run over the first six innings. He fanned six Polar Bears and didn't walk a batter. Dreyfuss improved to 2-1 on the year.

Collins' two-run single sparked Hamilton's four-run second. The Continentals needed just three batters to put two runs on the board as Rose was hit by a pitch, Mike Chiseri '16 doubled in the game's first run and Robert Morris '17 followed with a run-scoring single.

After scoring twice in the third (Rose doubled in a run then came in on a single by Ferrell), Hamilton scored six times in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

Ferrell doubled in a pair of runs after a run-scoring single off the bat of Andrew Haser '17, who came around to score on a wild pitch. Collins singled in a run and Haser closed the inning with his second RBI single of the inning.

The Polar Bears entered their final turn at bat trailing 14-3 and scored five runs on five hits, two walks and a hit batter before Jared Weisman '19 came in to get the game's final out.

Joe Gentile hit a two-run pinch-hit double and Evan Dumont-LaPointe followed with a single to drive in two more runs to highlight the inning.

Dumont-LaPointe and Jack Wilhoite both had two of Bowdoin's seven hits.

In the nightcap, Bowdoin scored four times in the first two innings and held on for the win. Hamilton rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning and brought the tying run to the plate before the Polar Bears secured the win.

Chiseri beat out a pinch-hit single to shortstop with one out and after Ferrell singled to put runners on the corners, Brett Mele '17 singled in the Continentals' first run and put the tying run at the plate.

Dumont-LaPointe doubled in two runs in the first and scored later in the inning.

Dan DePaoli '18 fell to 2-1 on the season, allowing just four hits and a walk over 6.1 innings.

Hamilton's 14-game spring trip ends Friday with a noon doubleheader against Keuka College.
