Hot start continues for baseball after sweep of Allegheny

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Hamilton College baseball team picked up its third doubleheader sweep in eight days, defeating Allegheny College 7-4 and 12-3 in Auburndale, Fla. The Continentals, who've won four in a row, improve to 7-3 on the season.

Hamilton pounded out 27 hits in the sweep, with Brett Mele '17 contributing five and Andrew Haser '17 hitting his second grand slam in three days.

Spencer Vogelbach '18 and Max Jones '19 both threw complete games, allowing a total of four earned runs on the day.

Haser's walk-off grand slam made a winner of Vogelbach in the opener. The dramatic home run capped a five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh that started with a single to center by Zack Becker '16. Three straight one-out walks -- issued to Jordan Northrup '19, Kenny Collins '17 and Ryan Wolfsberg '17 -- brought Becker around to score, pulling Hamilton to 4-3. Haser cleared the bases with a shot over the left-center field fence for his seventh career home run.

Vogelbach picked up his first win of the spring, holding the Gators scoreless over the final four innings. He worked out of trouble in the seventh, setting down Allegheny's last three batters after the first two Gators had singled to lead off the inning.

He finished with five strikeouts and didn't walk a batter.

Wolfsberg drove in the first two Continental runs as well, singling home Mele in the bottom of the first and bringing in Northrup with a two-out RBI single. Wolfsberg, who reached base in all four of his trips to the plate, is batting .500 through 10 games with an on-base percentage of .585.

Dan Bonnett started Allegheny's three-run rally in the second with a ground-rule double before Cullen Flaherty and Patrick Orr followed with sacrifice flies.

In the nightcap, Jones earned his first collegiate victory allowing one earned run in the complete-game effort.  He set down 10 of the last 12 hitters he faced as Hamilton pulled away from a one-run game with eight runs over the last three innings.

Northrup led the offensive attack with four hits and three runs scored. Brian Ferrell '16 singled twice and doubled and Collins, Wolfsberg, Haser and Griffin Small '17 added two hits apiece.

The Continentals are averaging 11 hits and 7.6 runs per game to start the season, batting .373 as a team.

Ferrell singled in Haser two batters after Wolfsberg came in on a passed ball as Hamilton scored twice in the second.

After Austin Bristol's two-run triple tied the score for the Gators (2-2) with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning, Collins gave the Continentals the lead for good with a single to right that scored Northrup. Collins later scored on an Allegheny throwing error.

In the fifth, Northrup scored on a wild pitch and Small singled in Collins. Six seventh-inning runs sealed the win, highlighted by a two-run triple by Mele. Northrup, Wolfsberg and Haser each singled in a run and Mike Chiseri '16 kicked off the rally with an RBI double down the left field line.

Bristol and Joe Killian finished with two hits apiece.

The Continentals are idle until Wednesday when they face Bowdoin in Winter Haven, Fla., in a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader.
