Box Score Hamilton College's Margaret Gabriel '16 posted four points for the second straight game and the nationally ranked No. 11 Continentals held on for a 10-9 win against Florida Southern College at Bray Park in Bradenton, Fla., on Thursday night.
Hamilton (4-1 overall) has won four in a row after dropping the season opener by a goal. The Continentals scored two goals in the first three minutes and led throughout against Florida Southern, which is ranked 10th in this week's Division II Top 20 coaches poll.
Gabriel finished with two goals and two assists and is tied for the team lead with seven assists and 14 points. She needs just two more points to get to 100 for her Hamilton career.
Morgan Fletcher '17 scored three goals and leads the Continentals with 14. Taylor Ryan '17 chipped in a pair of goals and Jackie Cuddy '18, Casey File '17 and Hattie Duke '18 tallied one each.
Hannah Burrall '19 made nine saves and improved to 3-0 in goal for Hamilton. Darby Philbrick '18 contributed four ground balls and four caused turnovers, and File and Hannah Withiam '16 added two caused turnovers apiece.
Ashley Robertson, Kendall Kerge and Meghan O'Brien notched two goals each for the Moccasins (5-3). Emily Santoli and Shannon Gilfedder had one goal and one assist apiece. Taylor Gillis stopped eight shots and Rachael Griffith led the defense with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Nicole Bellini registered a goal, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Kerge won four draw controls and Sam Keesey came away with three more as Florida Southern owned a 13-7 advantage in that category.
Fletcher scored on a pass from Caroline McCarthy '16 just 65 seconds into the first half and Cuddy made it 2-0 with a free-position goal at the three-minute mark.
The Continentals led 3-2 midway through the first half when they scored three straight goals and put some distance between themselves and the Moccasins. Gabriel started the run with an unassisted goal and free-position tallies by Ryan and Duke made it 6-2 with 40 seconds left. Florida Southern cut its deficit to three goals when O'Brien scored with a second remaining, and Hamilton owned a 6-3 advantage at the break.
The Continentals held a four-goal lead on three occasions in the second half. Fletcher gave Hamilton a 7-3 lead with 20:42 to go and she made it 8-4 about two minutes later. File's seventh goal this season put the Continentals up 10-6 with 6:40 left.
The Moccasins nearly came all the way back with three goals in the last 6:15. O'Brien pulled Florida Southern within a goal with 15 seconds remaining but Philbrick won the ensuing draw control and Hamilton ran off the final seconds for the narrow victory.
The Continentals return to New York and travel to Skidmore College for a non-conference game on Tuesday, March 22, at 4 p.m.
