Hamilton College nearly pulled off the upset but lost 5-4 against the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in the first round of the 2016 NESCAC Men's Squash Championship at Trinity College on Friday night.
The Continentals (4-13 overall) are seeded 10th for the championship and are 28th in the most recent College Squash Association (CSA) rankings. Hamilton moves on to the consolation round, which will be held at Wesleyan University's Rosenbaum Squash Center on Saturday, Feb. 6. The Continentals take on No. 9 seed Tufts University at 12:15 p.m. and No. 11 seed Connecticut College at 2:30 p.m.
Bowdoin is the seventh seed in this event and is 21st in the CSA rankings. The Polar Bears defeated Hamilton 8-1 at Wesleyan less than two weeks ago.
Four matches went to five games and the Continentals won three of those four matches. Colin O'Dowd '19 improved to 8-5 this season with a five-game victory at the first position against Ian Squiers. Addison Morse '16 and Jonathan Ruth '18 lost the first two games of their matches at the eighth and ninth positions, respectively, but rallied to win the last three games against their Bowdoin opponents.
Sam Matlick '17 edged Satya Butler 13-11 in the first game at the fifth position and Matlick went on to sweep Butler in three games.
