Box Score Connecticut College scored a goal in each period and the Camels posted a 3-0 win against the Hamilton College Continentals in a 2016 NESCAC Women's Hockey Championship quarterfinal at Conn. College's Dayton Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The third-seeded Camels (15-7-3 overall) won for the 14th time in their last 18 games and advanced to the NESCAC semifinals against the No. 2 seed Amherst College at Middlebury College on Saturday, March 5, at 4 p.m.
Hamilton (11-10-4) was the sixth seed for the championship and the Continentals were making their 14th appearance in the 15-year history of this event. Hamilton hosted Conn. College for a two-game series on Feb. 19 and 20 and the teams played to a pair of 1-1 ties. Today's game marked the first time the two programs played each other in the history of this championship.
Sam Walther '18 made 22 saves for the Continentals, including 11 in the second period. Walther broke her own team records for goals against average and save percentage in a season. She posted a 1.54 goals against average and a .941 save percentage in 24 starts.
Stephanie Izzi scored twice for the Camels and Elena Gualtieri chipped in a goal and an assist. Katherine Chester turned away all 23 shots she faced, including 13 in the third period.
Gualtieri gave Conn. College a 1-0 lead at 7:10 of the first period with her 10th goal of the season. Jordan Cross was credited with her ninth assist. Gualtieri skated all the way through the neutral zone and down the left side of the ice before she stuck the puck between Walther's pads.
Izzi scored 25 seconds into a power play at 5:05 of the second period on the fifth assist this season for Cassie Hunter. Izzi skated through the neutral zone down the right side and went top shelf with her backhand to make it 2-0. The Camels finished 1-for-4 on the power play while Hamilton went 0-for-3 with the extra skater.
Izzi rounded out the scoring with her 12th goal just 2:30 into the third period. Gualtieri picked up her 11th assist. Gualtieri won the battle for a loose puck behind the goal and found Izzi in the slot where she scored on a one-timer.
The Continentals had a great chance in the opening period when Olivia Hawes '19 fired a wrist shot from near the left circle but Chester was able to make the save.
Hamilton pulled Walther for the final 2:29 of the third period in favor of an extra skater. Andrea Rockey '19 had a nice scoring opportunity on a backhanded shot with 1:30 to go. Sara Taffe '17 tried to break up the shutout with 59.4 seconds left but Chester made the stop.
