Women's hockey completes scoreless sweep at Colby

Box Score

The Hamilton College women's hockey team completed a weekend sweep of NESCAC rival Colby Saturday, blanking the host Mules 3-0 for the second game in a row. The shutout marks the first time the Continentals (3-2-0, 3-1 NESCAC) have ever held an opponent scoreless over a weekend series.

Sam Walther '18 recorded her 10th career shutout and Hamilton's penalty-killing unit came up with another big game as the Continentals improved to 10-3-1 against the Mules (0-5-1, 0-3-1) over the past seven seasons.

Walther made 26 saves to extend her school record for career shutouts. She now leads Division III in save percentage (.972) and is second in goals against average at 0.64.

The Continentals killed off all four Colby power plays to remain perfect on the season – Hamilton is one of only two teams that haven't given up a power-play goal this winter – and contributed a short-handed goal for the first time this season. Late in the third period, Hamilton caught the Mules with too many players forward on the power play. Andrea Rockey '19 came up the right side and ended up with a two-on-one with Caroline Knop '18, who took the pass and went to her backhand for a high shot that beat Colby goalie Hannah Insuik (27 saves).

Michaela Giuttari '20 opened the scoring with her first collegiate goal late in the first period. She came from behind Hamilton's net, skated between two Colby players near center ice then split a pair of defenders inside the blue line. Giuttari got around Insuik and stuffed the puck in the goal with just 4.4 seconds left.

Katie Parkman '17 scored her second of the season at 8:38 of the second period. She stole a puck from a Colby defender behind the Mule net and skated in front and ended up on her knees as she took the shot.

Hamilton plays a pair of non-conference games next weekend, starting with a 7 p.m. game at SUNY Oswego Friday. The Lakers are ranked seventh in both the D3hockey.com and USCHO.com polls.
