Ten tackles for Glebus '17 in last home football game of 2016

Box Score

Middlebury College racked up 29 first downs and 483 yards of offense as the Panthers posted a 45-10 NESCAC football win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Steuben Field on Saturday afternoon.

Middlebury (6-1 NESCAC) led just 10-3 late in the second quarter but scored a touchdown 60 seconds before the half, added three more in the third quarter and another midway through the fourth for a 45-3 cushion. The Continentals and the Panthers were playing in the Old Rocking Chair Classic for the 37th time.

Hamilton (2-5) turned the ball over six times and finished with 199 yards of offense. The Continentals honored their 18 seniors with a pregame ceremony.

Robert Morris '17 booted a season-long, 40-yard field goal that pulled Hamilton within 10-3 with 7:19 left in the second quarter. Morris is 6-for-7 on field goal attempts and has made all four of his extra-point attempts this year. The 13-play, 46-yard drive was helped by a personal foul flag on Middlebury, an 11-yard pass from Kenny Gray '20 to Charles Ensley '17 on third-and-long and a 9-yard run by Gray on third-and-four.

Gray was 7 of 21 for 40 yards before he was replaced by Cole Freeman '18 in the third quarter. Freeman finished 11-for-18 for 99 yards with a touchdown. Ensley caught six passes for 62 yards and Joe Schmidt '20 made a 5-yard touchdown catch with 3:19 remaining in the fourth quarter. Freeman found Schmidt on a quick out at around the 5, he made a move to get around a defender and scampered into the end zone. Schmidt has two TD receptions this year.

Matt Glebus '17 led the Continentals' defense with 10 tackles and recorded his second career sack. Colby Jones '19 was credited with nine stops, including seven solo, and broke up a pass. Jimmy Giattino '17 registered seven tackles and picked off the fourth pass of his Hamilton career. Alec Boyles '20 celebrated his first sack.

Middlebury quarterback Jared Lebowitz accounted for five of the Panthers' six touchdowns. Lebowitz, who played for a year at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas before he transferred to Middlebury, was 34 of 51 for 412 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. He also ran for a 2-yard touchdown that put the Panthers up 16-3 with 1:00 to go in the second quarter.

Middlebury's quick-strike offense had six scoring drives that took less than three minutes each. NESCAC leading receiver Conrado Banky finished with nine catches for 154 yards and three touchdowns -- all in the third quarter. Banky scored on an 11-yard reception on a quick slant from the left side that he caught in the middle of the field around the goal line. The second score was a 10-yard fade into the back left corner of the end zone where he made a diving catch. The third TD catch was a 30-yard pass down the left sideline that he grabbed in the end zone for a 37-3 cushion with 47.3 seconds left.

James Burke added 10 receptions for 96 yards and Jimmy Martinez chipped in six catches for 88 yards. Burke's 13-yard touchdown grab was the game's first score with 9:32 remaining in the first quarter. Pressure up the middle forced Lebowitz out of the pocket as he scrambled to his right and lofted a pass to Burke, who made a leaping catch in the back-right corner of the end zone.

Matt Cardew scored the Panthers' last touchdown on a 2-yard run with 6:39 to go in the fourth. Cardew's TD run came just two plays after the Continentals muffed a punt that was recovered by Middlebury's Bobby Ritter at the Hamilton 6.

Carter Massengill kicked a 20-yard field goal for a 10-0 Panther advantage with 4:46 left in the first quarter. Massengill made all six of his PATs.

Robert Wood led the Middlebury defense with six tackles, including two sacks, and a forced fumble. John Jackson came up with a sack, Ritter picked off two passes and Wesley Becton, Ian Blow and Kevin Hartley all had interceptions.

The Continentals travel to Bates College for their season finale on Saturday, Nov. 12 at noon. The Panthers host Tufts University on Saturday at noon.
