The Continentals (2-4 NESCAC) defeated Williams for the second year in a row and for the first time at home since 1996. Hamilton has won two straight at Steuben Field -- the Continentals edged Bowdoin College 26-25 on Oct. 15.
The Ephs (0-6) have dropped 11 consecutive games dating back to last year. Hamilton shut out Williams until there was a little more than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Continentals racked up 22 first downs and 383 yards of total offense. Hamilton's 173 yards on the ground were the most for the team since they gained 194 against the Ephs on Oct. 25, 2014.
Kenny Gray '20 was 13 of 24 passing for 210 yards with an interception for the Continentals. Gray ran for his second touchdown this year on a 1-yard quarterback sneak that gave Hamilton a 9-0 lead with 26.9 seconds left in the second quarter.
Charles Ensley '17 caught four of Gray's passes for 47 yards. Ensley moved into fourth place on the team's all-time list with 1,373 receiving yards. Joe Schmidt '20 added three catches for 47 yards and Jordan Jenkins '17 chipped in three receptions for 46 yards.
Morris made field goals of 23, 30 and 37 yards. He's 5-for-6 on field goal attempts and a perfect 3-for-3 on extra points. Morris is playing football for the first time after spending his first three years at Hamilton on the soccer team.
Mickey Keating '18 -- the Continentals' leading tackler -- was credited with a game-high 13 and intercepted his second pass this year. Tyler Hudson '19 added nine stops, including his fourth sack, and forced a fumble. Brent Lobien '17 picked up his eighth career sack and Cole Burchill '19 forced a fumble.
Jansen Durham came on in relief of Ephs' starting quarterback Peter Cahill and was 10-for-16 for 95 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Cahill was 4 of 6 for 59 yards. Noah Sorrento ran for 55 yards and added 21 more receiving. Tyler Patterson caught three passes for 47 yards and Adam Regensburg contributed three receptions for 46 yards. Regensburg scored on a 15-yard pass from Durham with 2:07 to go in the game when he cut to the middle from the left side on a slant pattern, jumped and caught the ball at the goal line near the left hash.
Regensburg also averaged 40.8 yards on five punts. Ben Anthony paced the Williams defense with nine tackles and Alex Brandeis had a sack and forced a fumble. Luke Apuzzi blocked a punt and returned an interception 16 yards, and Sam Gowen ended up with a sack.
Hamilton grabbed a 3-0 lead on its opening drive. Gutierrez carried the ball six times for 38 yards on the 11-play drive that covered 58 yards and took 5:52 off the clock. The Continentals had second-and-9 on the Ephs' 19 when Gray was sacked by Brandeis and fumbled. Hamilton lineman Sam Palomaki '20 recovered at the 30 and Gray got those 11 yards back on the next play when he completed a pass to Ensley. Morris came on and nailed a 37-yard field goal with 5:56 remaining in the first quarter.
The Continentals had a great chance to extend the lead when they started a drive at their own 44 after a 54-yard punt by Regensburg, who was up against the back of his own end zone. Eli Saucier '18 sprinted 32 yards down the left sideline on a reverse and Gutierrez followed with an 11-yard gain to the Williams 13. On third-and-4 from the 7, a bad snap sailed past Gray and he was forced to fall on it at the 22. A 39-yard field goal attempt by Morris just missed wide left with 11:03 left in the second quarter.
Hamilton's next possession ended with a punt blocked by Apuzzi and the Ephs took over at the Continental 15. Lobien sacked Cahill for a 6-yard loss on the next play but Hamilton was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct and Williams had first-and-goal at the 10. Once again, the Continentals' defense came up big as Poppy Green '17 caught Sorrento for a 16-yard loss. Two plays later, Regensburg missed a 43-yard field goal attempt wide left.
Hamilton took over at its own 26 and marched 74 yards in nine plays. A 43-yard pass from Gray to Ensley was wiped out by a holding penalty, but Gray found Ensley for 25 yards on third-and-10 to the Ephs' 49. On third-and-17, Gray heaved a 38-yard completion to Schmidt, and a roughing the passer penalty tacked on nine more yards down to the Williams 9. Two rushes by Gutierrez put the ball inside the 1 and Gray handled things from there. Morris' PAT made it 10-0.
The Continentals drove 43 yards on their first drive of the second half but Gray was picked off by Apuzzi at the Williams 7 and he returned it to his own 23. Durham, who was in the game for the first time, had a 15-yard pass to James Dunn at the Hamilton 29 brought back on an ineligible man downfield penalty. The Ephs were forced to punt three plays later.
The Continentals took over at their own 20 after a touchback and opened the drive with back-to-back 13-yard runs by Justin Leigh '20. On third-and-14, Gray lofted a 52-yard bomb to Alec Waugh '18 and he was brought down at the Williams 6. Four plays later, Morris nailed a 23-yard field goal that gave Hamilton a 13-point lead with 3:25 to go in the third quarter.
The Continentals extended their lead again on their next drive. Hamilton started at its own 39 and was helped by three penalties on the Ephs that moved the ball a total of 28 yards. The Continentals drove as far as the Williams 10 before they settled for a 30-yard field goal by Morris that put Hamilton up 16-0 with 8:16 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Ephs responded with their 15-play, 81-yard touchdown drive that featured a 23-yard pass from Regensburg to Dunn on a fake punt and a 5-yard run by Cahill on fourth-and-1. After Regensburg's TD catch, Williams went for the two-point conversion but Sorrento was stopped short of the goal line by a host of Continentals.
The last two minutes featured a 58-yard punt by Gray on a quick kick on third-and-5 that rolled to the Ephs 14 before it was downed. Two plays later, Keating sealed the win with his interception at the Williams 39.
Hamilton hosts Middlebury College in the battle for The Old Rocking Chair on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. The Ephs return home to take on Wesleyan University on Saturday at 1.
