Box Score Wesleyan racked up 511 yards of total offense and the Cardinals posted a 34-6 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Wesleyan's Corwin Stadium on Andrus Field on Saturday afternoon.
Hamilton (0-2 NESCAC) was limited to 180 yards and nine first downs, and the Continentals had the ball for a little under 23 minutes. The Cardinals (1-1) averaged 6.2 yards per carry on 44 rushing attempts and was 6 of 13 on third-down conversions.
Hamilton's Mickey Keating '18 was credited with a career-high 15 tackles, including 11 solo stops, forced a fumble and broke up a pass. Defensive end Brent Lobien '17 chipped in 12 tackles and recorded his sixth career sack. Cole Burchill '19 posted 10 tackles, Daniel Finger '17 had nine and Sean Tolton '19 added seven. Tyler Hudson '19 registered his third sack this season and his seventh in 10 career games.
Cole Freeman '18 completed 11 passes for 134 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown strike to Charles Ensley '17 that pulled the Continentals within 14-6 with 3:03 left in the second quarter. Ensley finished with four catches for 69 yards. Alec Waugh '18 added a pair of receptions for 41 yards. On special teams, Billy Wagner '20 averaged 43 yards on five punts with a season-best, 67-yard boot.
Mark Piccirillo completed 20 of 25 passes for 217 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Wesleyan. Piccirillo's 11-yard scoring toss to Dario Highsmith in the back of the end zone and Ike Fuchs PAT gave the Cardinals a 14-0 lead with 12:47 remaining in the second quarter. Piccirillo's 4-yard touchdown run and Fuchs' extra-point made it 27-6 with 2:55 to go in the third quarter, and his 5-yard TD pass to Ben Kurtz and Fuchs' PAT accounted for the final margin with 11:54 left in the fourth.
Highsmith scored the first touchdown on an 80-yard jaunt with 8:35 remaining in the first quarter and ended up with 101 yards rushing. Devon Carrillo sent the hosts into the break on a high note as his 3-yard touchdown run capped an eight-play, 62-yard drive with just 17 seconds to go in the second quarter. Mike Breuler led all players with eight catches for 84 yards.
Hamilton drove 60 yards in nine plays on its opening possession of the second half but the drive ended with a missed 31-yard field goal attempt.
Shayne Kaminski led the Wesleyan defense with seven tackles. Nate Taylor and Elias Camacho intercepted one pass apiece, and Brandon Morris and Jude Lindberg blocked kicks.
The Continentals play their home opener against Trinity on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. The game will be part of Fallcoming and Family Weekend.
