Hamilton baseball tops Canton 3-2

Box Score

The Hamilton College baseball team won its fourth game in five outings, beating SUNY Canton 3-2 in a non-league game on Tuesday night at Rome's DeLutis Field. The Continentals (10-6 overall) climbed out of a 2-0 first-inning hole.

Daniel DePaoli '18 and Finlay O'Hara '17 combined to allow just seven hits without issuing a walk. DePaoli fanned six batters while giving up six hits over six innings to earn his first collegiate victory. O'Hara earned his first save of the year and the third of his career with three innings of one-hit relief.

The Continentals staged a two-out rally in the fourth to score all three of their runs. Andrew Haser '17 drilled a home run – his second of the spring – to left field to put Hamilton on the board. Dean Rosenberg '18 followed with a single through the right side and Chris Collins '17 flared a double down the right field line. Robert Morris '17beat out a hard shot to third and Collins scored when the throw to first was wild.

Hamilton allowed just four base runners the rest of the way.

Christian Nazario-Cruz '17 doubled to the wall in left-center field with two outs in the fifth and Seth Douglas '17 led off the next inning with a double before he was thrown out at third on a stolen base attempt. One batter after Hamilton catcher Mike Chiseri '16 threw Douglas out at third, Jeremy Baez '17 singled through the left side. Nazario-Cruz led off the eighth with his second hit.

Canton's John Mancini '15 held the Continentals to five hits over seven innings before giving way to Khalil Bratton '16, who struck out all three batters he faced. Mancini had seven strikeouts and one walk.

The Kangaroos (6-18) scored both their runs in their first at bat. Wilson Matos '18 singled to right center after Nazario-Cruz was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After a successful double steal, Baez brought both runners home with a two-out bloop to center.

The Continentals are scheduled to play their first games on campus at Royce Field this weekend with a three-game NESCAC West Division series against Amherst College. The first game is Friday, April 17, at 4 p.m. Hamilton's game against SUNY Oneonta scheduled for Wednesday, April 15, has been postponed and a make-up date has not been determined.

The Kangaroos return to DeLutis Field on Wednesday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Cazenovia College.
