No. 13 field hockey takes first loss this season at No. 8 Middlebury

Continentals scored two goals in the fourth quarter but fell 4-2

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury College received goals from four players and the Panthers defeated the Hamilton College Continentals 4-2 in a clash between NESCAC teams ranked in the top 15 at Middlebury's Peter Kohn Field on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 20.
 

Season Update

  • Nationally ranked No. 13 Hamilton (4-1, 2-1 NESCAC) had outscored their previous four opponents 13-2 in opening the season with four straight wins.
  • The eighth-ranked Panthers (4-1, 3-0) posted their second victory against a ranked conference team in as many days. Middlebury shut out No. 17 Amherst College 3-0 on the road on Sept. 19.
 

How It Happened

  • The Panthers scored the first goal with 58 seconds left in the first quarter. Middlebury dominated the opening 15 minutes with a 13-0 advantage in shots and nine penalty corners to none for the Continentals.
  • The Panthers added two more goals midway through the second quarter, including one on a penalty stroke that made it 2-0. Middlebury grabbed a 4-0 lead just 45 seconds into the third quarter.
  • Hamilton scored its goals off penalty corners in the fourth quarter. Eleanor Cooper '28 notched the first one off a pass from Eva Bell '29 with 6:03 remaining, and Morgan Clarke '28 passed to Brighton McMahon '29 for the final tally with 16 seconds to go. The Continentals finished with six shots and five corners in the last 15 minutes.
 

Notes

  • McMahon scored a goal for the second straight game and has six points in the last three contests.
  • Cooper recorded her first goal this season and the second of her Hamilton career.
  • Clarke picked up her first point of 2026. The defender has started all 39 games in her career with the Continentals.
  • Bell registered her first career assist at Hamilton.
  • Kelly Janssen '28 made 10 saves for her first double-digit performance since she stopped 14 shots against Tufts University on Sept. 21, 2024.
  • Addie Chandler had a goal and an assist for the Panthers. Two goalkeepers combined to turn away three shots.
 

Next Game

The Continentals travel to St. Lawrence University (4-2) for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 5 p.m.
