Antezana '30 scores as men's soccer registers second consecutive draw

Continentals and Clarkson played for the first time since 2010

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Julian Antezana '30 scored late in the first half and the Continentals played to a 1-1 non-conference tie with the Clarkson University Golden Knights at Hamilton's Love Field on a cloudy and humid Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Season Update

  • The Continentals (1-1-2 overall) recorded their second consecutive draw. Hamilton tied Bates College 0-0 on Sept. 12.
  • Clarkson (2-1-2), which is a member of the Liberty League, also registered its second straight tie.

How It Happened

  • Brady Hyland '29 chipped a lofted ball from the Continentals' defensive side of the field over the Golden Knights' back line with a little under three minutes left in the first half. Antezana timed his run down the middle of the field perfectly and caught up to the bouncing ball just inside the edge of the 18. He popped a shot over the goalkeeper, who had come way off his line, and under the crossbar with 2:54 remaining.
  • Bodie Smith scored Clarkson's goal in the 39th minute on a right-footed shot that beat the goalkeeper low and inside the left post from about 20 yards out.
  • Matt Gatchell nearly put the Golden Knights back in front off a corner kick in the 51st minute, but his header was headed off the line by a Hamilton defender at the right post.
  • A hard shot from the middle of the field about 25 yards out by the Continentals' Troy Miller '28 sailed right into the waiting arms of goalkeeper Ian Burgos (three saves) in the 83rd minute.
  • Clarkson had one last chance with about 30 seconds to go, but Cole Mueller's medium-pace shot from the edge of the 18 was easily picked out of the air by the six-foot, three-inch goalkeeper Tobin Walsh '29.

Notes

  • Antezana scored his first collegiate goal in his fourth match.
  • Hyland was credited with his first assist this season and his third at Hamilton.
  • In his first start since Oct. 18 of last year, Walsh made three saves.
  • Smith has four of the Golden Knights' six goals.
  • The teams were playing each other for the first time since 2010 when the Continentals were still members of the Liberty League for soccer.
