Bates edges women's lacrosse on free-position goal with 12 seconds left

Garringer '29 and MacLean '29 scored three goals apiece for the Continentals

LEWISTON, Maine – Bates College's Caroline Keating scored on a free-position shot with 12 seconds left in the fourth quarter and lifted the Bobcats to a 12-11 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals on Bates' Garcelon Field on Saturday afternoon, April 4.

Season Update

  • The Continentals (4-6, 2-4 NESCAC) dropped their third straight. Three of their six losses have been by a goal.
  • The Bobcats (6-6, 2-5) recorded their second straight NESCAC win as they edged Bowdoin College in overtime on April 1.

How It Happened

  • With 14 seconds remaining, goalie Eliza Schwarz '27 was assessed a two-minute yellow card and had to leave the field. It was the only card all day for Hamilton. Keating made no mistake in capitalizing on the empty-net opportunity. Lily Goldsmith '28 won the ensuing draw for the Continentals but there wasn't enough time to get off another shot.
  • Hamilton's Lauren Garringer '29 opened the scoring 59 seconds into the contest. Garringer ran her free position in deep and tucked the ball past the goalie's right side of her body on a lefty shot.
  • That turned out to be the only lead of the afternoon for the Continentals. Hamilton managed to tie the score twice -- at 4-4 and 11-11.
  • Bates came back hot, netting the next three goals for a 3-1 lead.
  • Julia Lee '27 cut Hamilton's deficit in half with 7:25 remaining in the first quarter. Lee caught a pass on the left side of the arc and drove to the net, beating the Bobcats' goalie at hip height. Bates responded a little over a minute later on Lauren Wong's 22nd goal of the season and restored its two-goal lead.
  • Maddigan Leifer '26 netted a goal just 18 seconds later after an Elizabeth Rudge '27 draw control. Rudge hit Avery Trach '27, who ran the ball the distance and found Leifer. Leifer spun off her defender with speed and finished with a lefty shot, beating the goalie far side.
  • Garringer picked up her second goal with 4:37 to go in the first and tied the score at 4-4 on a Hamilton man-up advantage. Leifer found Garringer cutting through the middle and she beat the goalie on a cross-body shot to the lower right side. The Bobcats scored three unanswered goals for a 7-4 advantage.
  • Sophia Wright '28 scored on a strong ball-movement play from the Continentals. Natalie Mascitti '29 hit Wright with her back to the net in the slot and she had a strong finish with 4:03 left.
  • Grace MacLean '29 cut Bates' lead to one 39 seconds later. Mascitti's long pass found MacLean sneaking in front of the goalie, and she tucked a shot over the extended goalie's stick with 3:24 remaining. The Bobcats scored the next two goals and closed out the half with a 9-6 lead.
  • Garringer scored her third goal with 12:49 to go in the third. Mascitti picked up her third assist by hitting Garringer at the right post. Garringer cut the width of the arc and finished top right.
  • Leifer scored her 17th of the season two minutes later and made it 9-8. She split two defenders and twizzlered from distance, beating the goalie to the top-right corner. Bates scored the next two goals and went back up 11-8.
  • MacLean scored her 15th of the season with 1:46 left in the quarter. Wright moved in and out of the arc and found MacLean, whose shot beat the goalie from distance.
  • Lee's 63rd career goal brought Hamilton within one with 6:50 remaining on a man-up advantage. She drove the net and finished on a high-low shot on the left post.
  • MacLean's third goal served as the equalizer with 26 seconds to go on another player-up advantage. MacLean caught the ball on the left side of the arc, danced past two defenders and beat the goalie.
