Softball splits doubleheader at Bates, Abraham '29 records two-homer game

First-year drove in five runs during the doubleheader

LEWISTON, Maine – Hamilton College's Jess Chieco '29 provided three hits, three runs and two RBIs in the Continentals' 14-2 win over the Bates College Bobcats in the second half of a NESCAC doubleheader at Bates' Lafayette Street Field on Saturday, April 18. Hamilton salvaged a split after dropping game one by a score of 8-7.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (8-21, 1-13 NESCAC) has had five conference games decided by one run.
  • Bates (14-17, 4-10 NESCAC) recorded a doubleheader sweep against Wesleyan on Friday, April 17.

Game 1 (Bates wins, 8-7)

How It Happened

  • Hamilton's Juliana Abraham '29 launched her first career home run, a two-run shot to center field, to cap a five-run inning for the Continentals in the top of the first.
  • Bates responded in the bottom of the first as Isabel Bettencourt lifted a three-run home to left center.
  • Bates' Maya Lee and Ella Maher both drove in a run in the second and the Bobcats tied the game at 5-5.
  • The Bobcats added two runs in the third for a 7-5 advantage.
  • Abraham led off the top of the fourth and hammered a home run to center field and cut the deficit to 7-6. Nikki Dyche '28 ripped a leadoff double in the fifth and Gaby Guerra '27 drove her in with a single to left field to tie the game at 7-7.
  • Bates went back in front with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Hamilton was unable to put the tying run in scoring position in the final two innings.

Notes

  • Abraham recorded the first multi-home run game by a Hamilton player since the 2024 season. She recorded a season-high three runs batted in, a season-high two runs scored, and tied her season high with two hits.
  • Guerra finished with two hits, two RBIs and one run, while Hadley Rogers '26 added two hits, one RBI and one run.
  • Dyche scored two runs with a double and a walk.
  • Yael Everett '28 allowed one hit and zero earned runs with three strikeouts in four innings in relief.
  • Bettencourt led the Bobcats with two hits, two runs and three runs batted in.
  • Bates' Brigid Gaffny collected the win after completing six innings in relief.

 Game 2 (Hamilton wins, 14-2 in 5 inn.)

How It Happened

  • Hamilton put up 11 runs on six hits in the top of the third for a 12-0 advantage. Chieco and Alison Zorn '26 drove in runs with singles to left field, then Everett, Alexis Mayer '26, Miranda Mosqueda '28, Lydia Mirabito '26 and Rogers each drew walks with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 8-0.
  • Abraham drove in two runs with a double to right center, then Chieco brought in Rogers with her second RBI single of the frame.
  • Rogers drove in Lauren Farace '29 with a single up the middle in the fourth, and Chieco crossed the plate in the fifth following a sacrifice fly by Mosqueda to make it 14-2.
  • Everett tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fifth to end the contest via run rule.

Notes

  • Mayer, Mosqueda, Rogers, Abraham, and Chieco each drove in two runs.
  • Chieco registered season highs in hits, runs and RBIs.
  • Mirabito and Zorn contributed two hits, one RBI and one run scored each.
  • Rogers added two walks and two runs.
  • Abraham scored a season-high two runs for the second consecutive game.
  • Everett pitched all five innings with three hits and one earned run allowed to record her fourth win and sixth complete game of the season.
  • Hamilton totaled a season high in runs and allowed a season-low three hits.
  • Sienna Pietrasiewicz recorded one hit and one RBI for the Bobcats.

Hamilton will play a non-conference doubleheader at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (19-11) on Tuesday, April 21. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
