Baseball splits pair of one-run games at Bowdoin

Raichur ’28 delivered three hits in game one of the doubleheader

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Hamilton College Continentals claimed a 7-6 win over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in game one of a doubleheader and dropped game two in extra innings to complete a four-game non-conference series at Bowdoin's Pickard Field on Saturday, April 18.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (12-14, 5-4 NESCAC West), which took two of three games from Middlebury last weekend in a NESCAC West Division series, also split a doubleheader against the Polar Bears on Friday, April 17.
  • Bowdoin (13-16, 3-6 NESCAC East) moved to 7-8 at home this season.

Game 1 (Hamilton wins, 7-6 in 7 inn.)

How It Happened

  • Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second, Hamilton's Satish Raichur '28 and Taylor Kaufman '26 recorded a single and a double, respectively, to lead of the inning and put runners on second and third. Anthony Palumbo '29 lifted a fly ball to left field which allowed Raichur to tag up and score and tied the game at 1-1.
  • Bowdoin's Liam Foley ripped an RBI double in the fourth, and Will Bordes drove in Foley with a triple to center field and extended the Polar Bears' lead to 5-1.
  • Hamilton rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh and grabbed their first lead at 7-5. Chester Boynton '27 smacked an RBI single, Lucas Herman '26 scored Boynton with a sacrifice fly, then Raichur doubled down the left field line and drove in Gianni DiCerbo '27 to cut the deficit to 5-4. Noa Oyadomari '29 and Palumbo both walked with the bases loaded, and Boynton capped the big inning with his second RBI single.
  • Conor Moriarty drove in a run in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out double and cut Hamilton's lead to 7-6. With runners on second and third, Hamilton's Ethan Righter '27 recorded a strikeout to close out the win.

Notes

  • Raichur went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run and one RBI.
  • Boynton finished with two hits, two runs batted in and one run scored.
  • DiCerbo, Righter and Kaufman provided one hit and one run each.
  • Righter pitched the last two innings and was credited with his third win of the season.
  • Mantas Kempinas '28 tossed one scoreless inning in relief. Through 11 relief appearances and 20 innings pitched, Kempinas holds a 0.90 earned run average, a .197 opponent batting average and a .95 WHIP.
  • Foley led the Polar Bears with two hits, two runs and one RBI.

Game 2 (Bowdoin wins, 10-9 in 8 inn.)

How It Happened

  • The Polar Bears struck first with three runs in the bottom of the first. Righter hammered a two-run triple in the third, and Herman drove him in with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 4-4. Hamilton loaded the bases later in the inning, but was unable to take the lead.
  • Bowdoin put up four runs in the bottom of the third for an 8-4 advantage.
  • Hamilton responded with three runs in the fourth. Herman drove in DiCerbo and Oyadomari with a double to left field, and Kaufman brought in Herman with a single up the middle.
  • Hamilton's Jeremy Diaz '27 drew a leadoff walk in the fifth and came around to score following a single to center field by Righter and once again tied the game.
  • Boynton put Hamilton in front, 9-8, after launching his first home run of the season in the top of the sixth.
  • Moriarty drove in Cal Thompson and tied the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Bordes drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the eighth and came around to score later in the inning to give Bowdoin a walk-off victory.

Notes

  • Righter registered a career high-tying three hits, including a career-high two extra-base hits and a season-high three runs batted in.
  • Palumbo recorded a season-high three hits.
  • Herman drove in three runs in a game for the fifth time this season.
  • DiCerbo and Oyadomari both scored two runs.
  • DiCerbo drew a team-high two walks. He ranks third in the NESCAC in on-base percentage at 0.510.
  • Andrew Millington '28 made his first career appearance on the mound and tossed two scoreless innings in relief.
  • Bowdoin's Will Logue went 4-for-4 with a double and a home run.
  • Sam Sacerdote earned the win for Bowdoin after completing three innings in relief with one run allowed.

Next Game

Hamilton will play its final home games of the regular season with a doubleheader against the University of Rochester (12-16) on Tuesday, April 21 beginning at 2 p.m.
