Softball downed by No. 19 Colby, Dyche ’28 drives in four

Sophomore set a career high with four RBIs in game two

CLINTON, N.Y. – The Colby College Mules won both games of a NESCAC doubleheader against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Saturday, April 11.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (7-18, 0-10 NESCAC) was coming off a doubleheader sweep at SUNY Oneonta on Wednesday, April 8.
  • Nationally ranked No. 19 Colby (17-4, 3-1) split a non-conference doubleheader against No. 20 Husson University on Thursday, April 9.

Game 1 (Colby wins, 7-1)

How It Happened

  • Victoria Ramirez drove in Julian Kiley with a single through the right side for a 1-0 Colby lead in the top of the second.
  • Hamilton's Yael Everett '28 tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fourth then drove in Jess Chieco '29 with a single to center field in the bottom of the inning and tied the game at 1-1.
  • Colby tallied six runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a three-run home run by Caroline DeSimone, for a 7-1 advantage.

Notes

  • Hamilton's Hadley Rogers '26 recorded a team-high two hits, including a double.
  • Sofia Santana '26 reached base twice with a single and a walk.
  • Colby's Sophia Meade improved to 5-1 on the season after tallying seven strikeouts in 3.1 perfect innings in relief.
  • Carissa Cassidy recorded two hits, two runs batted in and one run scored for Colby, while Kiley scored a team-high two runs.
 

Game 2 (Colby wins, 9-8)

  • Kiley provided an RBI single in the top of the first for a 1-0 Colby lead, but the Continentals tallied four in the bottom of the inning.
  • Santana walked, Miranda Mosqueda '28 doubled, and Chieco walked to load the bases with one out, then Gaby Guerra '27 poked a single to center field and drove in Santana and Mosqueda. Rogers brought in Chieco with a ground ball to the right side, then Nikki Dyche '28 singled up the middle and scored Guerra for a 4-1 advantage.
  • Colby got a run back with doubles by Ramirez and Cassidy in the second.
  • Ramirez delivered a bases clearing double during a four-run inning for the Mules in the third.
  • DeSimone and Kelsey Sullivan both homered in the fifth and Colby extended its lead to 9-4.
  • Hamilton rallied for four runs in the fifth and cut the deficit to one run. Chieco, Guerra and Rogers loaded the bases with three consecutive singles to start the inning, then Dyche cleared the bases with a double to right center field. Alexis Mayer '26 brought in Dyche with a single up the middle later in the inning.
  • Meade took over in the circle for Colby and got a strikeout and a ground ball to end the fifth and strand three runners on base.
  • Hamilton put the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh with one out but Meade retired the next two hitters to end the game and earn the save.

Notes

  • Dyche set a career high with four runs batted in on two hits.
  • Guerra tallied two hits, two runs and two runs batted in.
  • Kelsey Vadnais '28 went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Continentals.
  • Chieco added one hit and two runs.
  • Everett allowed just one hit, one walk and zero runs in 2.2 innings in relief.
  • Meade tallied five strikeouts in 2.2 scoreless innings to collect her third save of the season.
  • Ramirez finished with two hits and three runs batted in.

Next Game

Hamilton will return to action with a doubleheader at Bates College (9-14, 1-7 NESCAC) on Saturday, April 18 beginning at noon.
