CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's
Edo Spadaccini '26 drove in two runs with a single late in game one of a doubleheader and lifted the Continentals to a 9-7 NESCAC West Division victory against the Middlebury College Panthers at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon, April 11. Middlebury responded with a 10-4 win in game two and evened the series.
Season Update
- Hamilton (9-12, 4-4 NESCAC West) hadn't played since the Continentals were swept by Wesleyan University in a doubleheader at home on April 4.
- The Panthers (14-8, 2-3), who have won the last two NESCAC championships, were coming off a 16-10 victory at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on April 8.
Game 1 (Hamilton wins, 9-7 in 7 inn.)
How It Happened
- Middlebury scored two runs in the top of the fifth and pulled in front, 7-6.
- With two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the sixth, Michael Tallarida '26 ripped a single through the left side and Lucas Herman '26 and Satish Raichur '28 loaded the bases with walks. Taylor Kaufman '26 drew a third consecutive walk and forced in Tallarida with the tying run. Spadaccini stepped to the plate and ripped a base hit through the right side of the infield, scoring Raichur and pinch runner Jeremy Diaz '27 for the 9-7 advantage.
- Middlebury's Henry Ayers and Sam Gersch doubled in the top of the seventh, but Mantas Kempinas '28 stranded both runners in scoring position and collected the win.
- Andrew Baay drove in two runs with a single through the left side during a five-run inning for the Panthers in the top of the first.
- Hamilton responded with four runs in the bottom of the first. Alfonso Rada '27 ripped a single to left field that drove in Kaufman and pulled the Continentals within 5-4.
- Middlebury loaded the bases with two outs in the third, but Aden Soroca '27 got a big strikeout and ended the threat.
- Ethan Righter '27 and Gianni DiCerbo '27 drove in runs in the bottom of the fourth and Hamilton grabbed its first lead at 6-5.
Notes
- Kempinas earned his first career win after recording three strikeouts with two hits and zero runs allowed in 2.1 innings in relief.
- Tallarida went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
- Rada and Righter finished with two hits, one run and one RBI apiece.
- Kaufman and Spadaccini tallied two RBI apiece.
- Herman drew two walks and scored a run.
- Ayers recorded two hits, two runs and one RBI for the Panthers.
Game 2 (Middlebury wins, 10-4)
- DiCerbo led off the bottom of the first with a single and Herman drove him in with a double down the left field line for a 1-0 lead. Rada started the second with a single and eventually came around to score on an outfield error.
- Middlebury put up five runs in the third with the help of a three-run home run by Anthony Pellagrini. A sacrifice fly by Pellagrini in the seventh extended the lead to 7-2.
- Herman drove in Tallarida and Righter with a double to right center in the bottom of the seventh and trimmed the deficit to 7-4.
- Middlebury added three runs in the eighth, highlighted by Ayers' two-run triple.
Notes
- Herman recorded two doubles in a game for the second time this season, and tallied a season-high three runs batted in for the fourth time.
- DiCerbo, Tallarida, Rada and Righter provided one run and one hit each.
- Kaufman drew Hamilton's lone walk.
- Kenny Harten '29, Kyle Egidio '27 and Daniel Jirgal '26 threw scoreless innings in the fourth, fifth and ninth, respectively.
- Jirgal recorded one strikeout in his first appearance of the season.
- Joe Basso registered three hits, three runs batted in and two runs scored for Middlebury.
- Emmet George collected his first win of the season after recording seven strikeouts with four hits and two runs allowed in six innings.
